Abstract
Purpose: The role of non-profit organisations (NPOs) in society has been proved by scholars, who advocated for their purpose, to be overlooked and unappreciated for their efforts. Furthermore, governments tend to decrease their support for NPOs, which shifts the burden of support to private companies to help NPOs achieve their goals. This research sought to assess the NPO sustainability strategies employed to maintain an orphanage in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, South Africa. This research helped to fill the existing gap in literature on South African NPO projects, in terms of how they ensured both tangible and intangible value creation in their planning, leading, organising and controlling of a community project. Very little research has been conducted on NPOs and their attainment of sustainability on their projects in the South African context; therefore, this research sought to lay a foundation for future research endeavours in this regard. ..
