Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find factors which influenced the
establishment of townships in South Africa, with special reference to
Daveyton on the East Rand.
Research has shown that townships in South Africa were established as a
means of clearing the slum and squatter areas, that were mushrooming in
and around towns and cities of South Africa. This was also in line with
the policy of the South African Government of establishing racially
segregated residential areas.
Daveyton established in 1955 as a model township, was a means of
providing proper accommodation to the inhabitants of the Apex squatter
camp near Benoni, who were living in squalid conditions.
The "site and service" scheme was implemented in Daveyton and families
from the Apex squatter camp moved to Daveyton. The movement to
Daveyton was voluntary.
