- Description: Abstract: This study aims to provide insight into the positioning and utilisation of collaborative workspaces within corporate companies in South Africa. Through an understanding of current literature and the application of the case study methodology, the research demonstrates how collaboration has become an important concept in designing corporate workspaces. The inclusion and application of this concept within workplace design is intended to introduce and foster new work styles that promote a company’s effectiveness, productivity and ability to produce innovative work. In this study the researcher aims to capture the reality of collaboration and interactions which exists within corporate workspaces both locally and internationally through the use of qualitative research. The investigation was done within an empirical interpretive paradigm where a variety of data, differing viewpoints and methods of analysis were used involving various processes of observation. In this study, the multiple case study method allows for an investigation into how collaborative workspaces have been positioned and utilised within three corporate companies, namely Standard Bank, Ernst and Young and Alexander Forbes. The selected literature highlights the concept of work modes and how workspaces should accommodate the variety of processes which take place within an organisation. Emphasis is placed on the concept of collaboration and the need to include this type of knowledge sharing, to positively impact employees and the organisation as a whole, through the promotion and nurturing of innovation. The findings of this study reveal that while corporate companies in South Africa have started to introduce collaborative workspaces, there are a variety of elements which should be reviewed and improved in order for organisations to fully capitalise from the benefits of collaboration. The role of designers is highlighted and emphasis is placed on the need for processes such as post occupancy studies in order to measure the success of the inclusion of these workspaces. While organisations have become aware of the importance of collaboration, this study underlines the need for design solutions which are tailored to specific organisations, and the work processes and types of employees within a particular company. It is clear from the research that the process of change management is essential in introducing collaborative work settings and this change has to come as a desire of the organisation to suite and adapt to their corporate culture... , M.Tech. - Authors: Ndhlovu, Mathamana Martin
- Date: 2012-08-22
- Subjects: Teams in the workplace - South Africa , Team learning approach in education , School management and organization - Social aspects - South Africa , School management teams
- Type: Mini-Dissertation
- Identifier: uj:2954 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/6381
- Description: M.Ed. , Smit and Cronje (1992: 244) indicate that teamwork could be seen as a behavioural change technique seeking to redirect and improve employee attitudes, skills and knowledge basis in order to enhance the capacity of individuals to perform assigned tasks in co-ordination with others. Yet many schools in the Northern Province are inefficient. Could this perhaps be the result of a lack of shared vision and commitment to common goals? This research holds the view that teamwork should improve the effectiveness and efficiency of educational institutions. In the light of the problem formulated above, the following questions demarcate the project: What is the role of teamwork as an aspect of educational management in secondary schools? What are the components of teamwork and how do they affect the management of schools? Is it possible to design a strategy which principals could use to enhance teamwork? It is therefore hoped that the development of a strategy to facilitate teamwork in these schools will promote effective educational management. AIM OF THE STUDY: In view of the problem formulated above, the general aim of this study is to investigate the role of teamwork as an aspect of educational management in secondary schools.

An exploration of the integration challenges experienced by advertising agencies between digital and traditional specialist teams

- Description: Abstract : This qualitative research study set out to discover through a case study approach how a South African advertising agency integrated their digital specialist team with the above the line, traditional team A body of existing literature was reviewed to better understand the constructs that underpin this phenomenon of agency integration, namely: changes in the macro, industry environment that spur on integration, especially understanding the role of emergent digital technology. McCann Worldgroup Johannesburg was selected as a case study for the purpose of this research. The major findings include a consensus around the failure of the integration initiative for several reasons. The integration initiative lacked substantial investment and leadership decided to pursue avenues that were quicker and easier to implement as opposed to what would have success and longevity. The implications of this approach on the teams were also investigated and the findings indicate that the team members experienced the integration process as emotional and taxing, and feelings of fear, frustration, misunderstanding, inadequacy and irrelevance were reported. The social and cultural dynamic was interrupted and so the work output suffered owing to duplication of resources, non-collaboration and longer turnaround times to deliver on integrated brand strategy. , M.A. (Strategic Communication)
