Geestelike welsyn as dimensie van 'n gebalanseerde lewe : 'n persoonlike en professionele leierskapsperspektief.

- Description: M.Phil. , The research problem that was investigated in this study was to obtain more clarity on and insight into the spiritual dimension of a person. Clearly, the importance of the spiritual dimension for a balanced life-style is not always realized and even neglected. Few people know how to develop this dimension. In view of the statement of the problem the specific aims of the study were: to analyse the conceptual meaning of the spiritual dimension of a person; to establish the importance of the spiritual dimension for a balanced lifestyle; and to propose guidelines for the development of the spiritual dimension of a person. A nomothetical research strategy was used. Universal qualities of the spiritual dimension were described. Furthermore, a descriptive strategy was incorporated to enhance understanding, insight and knowledge of the spiritual dimension. A hermeneutic strategy was also used, as can be seen in the in-depth analysis of the concept: the spiritual dimension. Systematic study was done of existing literature based on the spiritual dimension of man. Throughout the research. different theories and opinions concerning this topic were examined. The concept "spiritual dimension" was further illuminated by means of a word and concept analysis as to what the spiritual dimension truly entails. It was found that the spiritual dimension is in fact a life-giving dimension, that can be divided into three main components: the inner self; freedom of the will; and man's religious ties. The true inner self is discovered in the spiritual dimension. This immortal dimension is in fact what man is. It encompasses man's true personality and is also the area where personal growth and maturing take place. The following components were identified: the need to find meaning; values and principles; personal mission; and higher mission: to serve the world and other people — to leave behind a legacy. Man makes choices based on his/her freedom of will and responsibility as can be found in the spiritual dimension. Finally, the focus is on man's religious ties as a component of the spiritual dimension. It is from and within the spiritual dimension that man can relate to a higher divine authority. It is here where man's God communicates with him/her that inner strength can be experienced. The spiritual dimension is thus important for a balanced life-style. It was found that man can experience inner fulfillment by finding meaning in life. Living according to man's principles as well as striving for his/her personal and higher mission can thus find help man to meaning. The importance of the spiritual dimension can further be seen in human being's relationship with their God. They receive inner strength and direction from their God. Man should make time to develop his/her spiritual dimension, to read inspirational literature, to pray and meditate and to regularly make a recommitment to his/her values and principles. To be knowledgeable about the spiritual dimension, to realize its importance and to know how to develop it, can contribute to man paying more attention to it.

The impact of the spiritual life dimension on personal resilience
- Authors: Ackermann, Riëtte
- Date: 2013-07-10
- Subjects: Spiritual life , Resilience (Personality trait)
- Type: Thesis
- Identifier: uj:7597 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/8463
- Description: M.A. (Industrial Psychology) , The aim of the research is to explore the impact of the spiritual life dimension on individuals’ personal resilience through the analysis of narratives. The complexity of the global world of business requires individuals to be resilient in order to survive and thrive. Through focusing on spirituality, the study highlights possible tools and techniques that may assist individuals in developing personal resilience. A literature review was conducted in order to describe resilience as recognised in the literature and to define the concept ‘spirituality’. The research method was qualitative in order to allow for depth of understanding and more specifically, a narrative approach provided data in the form of meaningful stories. Purposive sampling was used based on certain criteria with the intention of selecting cases that were best suited to achieve the research objectives. The sample of four professional individuals was small to meet the requirements of in-depth interviews and narrative data analysis. The data collection process explored individuals’ subjective understanding of spirituality and their subjective description of the impact of their spirituality on their resilience. The findings show that purpose and meaning and religion are the main themes used to define spirituality. Common spiritual practices include: prayer, reflection, meditation/contemplation, visualisation, attending church, and following a spiritual routine. These practices result in positivity for the participants in this study. Setbacks and change surfaced as the main examples of situations requiring resilience.
