- Description: M.Comm. , As the South African economy has begun to recover after the financial crisis of the last few years, most organisations have initiated cost-cutting initiatives to ensure sustainability. With increased globalisation and a more competitive environment the challenges for organisations to survive and grow have increased. The objective of the study was to determine high performance criteria of successful organisations and to evaluate Company X according to the identified performance criteria. This will enable Company X to determine according to which criteria it is performing well and where improvement is needed to transform itself into a high performing organisation. Becoming a high performing organisation can assist Company X to become more competitive in the enterprise architecture and business process management consulting industry. The first phase of the study involved a literature review to identify high performance criteria of successful organisations. The identified criteria provide a guideline against which Company X could be evaluated. The results of the study showed that the criteria of a high performance organisation are an articulated strategy, a culture of customer satisfaction and continuous improvement, a structure that is flat and adaptable, consistent financial performance and quality services. The second phase of the study was conducted at Company X with the collection of secondary data through documents and primary data through interviews. The data were analysed and combined through thematic and content analysis. The assessment of Company X’s performance determined that Company X does comply with some criteria of high performance organisations. These include the culture of the company, consistent financial improvement and effective leadership. It was identified that attention have to be paid to the development of its human resource practices, documentation and optimisation of the company’s processes, increased collaboration and knowledge sharing, and documentation and communication of strategies and goals. The conclusion is that Company X complies with some of the important criteria of a high performing organisation and by attending to the improvement of identified criteria has the ability to become a higher performing organisation. This will enable Company X to distinguish itself from competitors and foster stronger relationships with clients.

- Description: Abstract: Transport infrastructure meets the demands for people and cargo delivery by providing access to working, shopping and travelling and improving the quality of life of citizens. Road infrastructure needs to be sustained for eons after its development. However, there is no consensus on the criteria upon which the operational performance of road infrastructure projects is assessed. This paper aims to identify all potential criteria for assessing road projects in operation. A desk study was conducted using relevant journal and conference papers obtained from databases including ASCE Library, Science Direct and Ebscohost. Thematic analysis was used to identify emerging themes from extant literature. The themes were tabulated and ranked based on their frequency of occurrence to determine the most important criteria for measuring the performance of road projects in operation. Findings indicate that institutional productivity and effectiveness, operational efficiency, health and safety, mobility, environmental element, public acceptability, asset value, legal and technical factors can be used to assess the performance of road projects. The study provides vital information which would be beneficial to project managers, and indeed investors, in assessing and projecting sustainable performance of road projects in operation.

- Description: M.Comm. , Over the years, performance measurement systems have moved the focus from financial indicators as a means of measuring performance to a ‘balanced’ system of both financial and non-financial indicators” (Burgess, Ong, & Shaw, 2007:583). The public sector, which is entrusted with substantial budgets from state funds, can no longer get away with only reporting on how state funds were used, but they also have to account for the way in which the set strategic objectives have been met with regard to service delivery. This latter requirement stresses the importance of effective implementation of the management of performance in the public sector. In order to meet the objectives associated with human resource management (HR), organisations have to have performance management systems in place (Lawler III, 2003). The study focuses on how performance management is implemented in the public sector and is contextualised in one of the government departments concerned with security.

- Description: M.Comm. , This study establishes an introductory management tool in the form of a computergenerated report card. The report card displays an overview of ~II pertinent key performance areas within an explosives production plant. The key performance areas cater for the planning, organising, staffing, reporting and controlling of explosives within an explosives production facility. The concept of the report card for the explosives production manager, makes use of the balanced scorecard as well as other key performance management tools to encourage management control, open communication and enhance performance drivers. The overall objective of the dissertation is to use certain assumptions that have become current in academic discussions of management control with particular relevance to aligning strategic control in order to establish what constituents may influence the production facilities' effectiveness, safety, efficiency and future focus areas for managers in the explosives production environment. There is nothing new about the basic notion of combining a number of performance measures in a compact description for a business operation. Recent developments have yielded useful approaches for management control within production companies. This research paper takes an avid search into the various communication tools, financial views, production flexibility, performance drivers, experience as well as development aspects that take place on a day-to-day basis within the explosives production facility. The essential indicators that constitute attention from management are outlined and drafted as a management tool that allows for the total comprehensive picture of the explosives production factory to be accurately reported and acted upon. This allows for more precise information upon which easier decision-making can take place.

- Description: As “green” issues continue to become a global concern in the manufacturing supply chain, developing appropriate performance measurement systems for specific supply chains is imperative. Various green supply chain management strategies have been proposed in different contexts. On the other hand, a number of performance management systems (PMS) have been proposed. However, given the variations in the contexts of the available green strategies and the performance measurement approaches, selecting or developing suitable performance measures and the ensuing PMS under a given supply chain context is not trivial. The purpose of this study is to develop a structured taxonomic approach to developing PMS under various green supply chain conditions, contexts, and business objectives. Therefore, we (i) explore extant empirical studies on green supply chain activities and environmental management, (ii) develop a taxonomy of green supply chain strategies, (iii) derive a structured approach to developing green performance management systems, and, (iv) provide a taxonomic performance measurement framework consisting of environmental, economic and social performance metrics. Unlike past studies, the taxonomic framework forms a practical platform to assist decision makers when developing a suitable set of performance measures and the ultimate PMS while considering the particular context of specific green strategies under which the PMS is supposed to operate.

- Description: This thesis presents a structured approach to measure the performance of a shared services business unit. This approach links the activities in the areas at which a shared services business unit must excel to create sustainable value for the organisation to the organisational vision. The methodology developed can be used to measure the performance of a shared services business unit by all the stakeholders that have an interest in the organisation. The study concludes that measuring of the performance of a shared services business unit is dependent on the organisational vision and strategies as contained in a mission statement. The study further concludes that as the transformation of technology, business processes, people and customer satisfaction are required for continuous evolution of the shared services; the activities that make up these areas should form the basis of the performance measurement of shared services. These activities in the areas of technology, business processes, people and customer satisfaction should be derived from the organisational vision and mission, and be supportive of the organisational mission and vision. The author has studied shared services and performance measurement metatheories and has found that the principles applicable to measure the strategic performance of an organisation can be applied to a shared services business unit. Some of these principles are so straight forward that they are often overlooked and taken for granted. The empirical methodology in this thesis follows a structured approach where the sample framework was tested to determine if the sample elements comply with the requirements of shared services. Following on this the study had to determine if the remaining sample elements are measuring the performance of their respective organisations in a structured manner. Only once this has been established can the study determine the manner in which these sample elements measure the performance of their shared services. After this, the elements identified through the literature study and empirical research could be build into a hierarchy of performance measurement for a shared services business unit. In developing a hierarchy of performance measures for a shared services business unit, shared services organisations have been provided with a structured approach to measure the performance of their shared services business unit that will indicate the value created by the shared services to all stakeholders concerned. , Prof. A.L. - Description: As environmental issues are continually and rapidly emerging as one of the most crucial topics in strategic manufacturing decision making, the formulation of “green” performance management systems is very important. This research seeks to introduce and explore green performance measurement frameworks that exist in various real-world case studies that are found in literature. The study yielded a set of four taxonomic performance measurement systems that are applicable in specific contexts of manufacturing supply chain strategies. Moreover, specific green performance metrics are provided in respect of the identified green manufacturing strategies. Implications of the application of each performance management system on existing manufacturing policies are evaluated, giving practical managerial insights. The study forms an essential framework for the decision maker to rapidly develop a suitable performance system in a green manufacturing environment, within a reasonable time frame.
