- Description: Abstract: The multi-organisational mode of outsourcing projects increases the significance and complexity of project communication. Communication is essential for any organisation, offering the necessary structures within which people may successfully work together, make decisions and act to accomplish organisational goals. If project necessities are not communicated accurately, negative outcomes are frequently the result, proving detrimental to the organisation and the outsourced project. Literature review revealed ten common challenges to the outsourcing of projects, with mitigation strategies identified to minimise the impacts of such challenges. This study makes use of the case study research method and semi-structured interviews as the primary means of data collection. The method of analysis chosen for the study was the qualitative approach of thematic analysis. A cross-case analysis was done, similarities and variations were grouped together, and themes were identified based on participants’ responses. These were compared to the literature findings. It was found that six of the ten challenges were experienced in all three case studies. Four were unique to particular projects. The findings indicate that challenges affected project teams’ ability to communicate effectively, and that the identified mitigation strategies all included the component of communication, whether synchronous or asynchronous. With the achievement of the research objective, this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge within the project management fraternity and within academia. Knowledge gained may be used by project management professionals and will, it is hoped, enhance the way projects are outsourced and managed in the engineering sector. , M.Phil. The influence of communication within organizations

- Description: Abstract: Research has shown that communication is one of the key factors in organizational success and if not dealt with correctly will lead to poor organizational performance. This minor dissertation aims to investigate why modern day organizations still perform poorly in the area of communication. This will be demonstrated by researching the risk areas associated with communication as well as the factors within organizations that influence communication. This qualitative research study makes use of a case study, speed networking survey as well as a questionnaire. The findings of the research conducted identified four factors which influence communication namely, the communication software platform, organizational structure & strategy, communication competency of the employees and communication planning. Furthermore, the results found two main areas of risk associated with communication namely, the use of informal communication platforms (such as WhatsApp) and the communication of company information. The main conclusions drawn from this research were that organizations mainly perform poorly in the area of communication due to the lack of knowledge of the impact communication has on organizational performance. Modern day technologies such as email and instant messaging services have aided in the speed of communication but must not be solely relied on to solve all communication needs. This research calls for organizations to develop communication departments which work to identify the factors that influence their ability to communicate as well as the communication risk areas within the organization. Identifying and providing solutions to mitigate these factors should be their sole purpose. , M.Ing. (Engineering Management)

- Description: Abstract: Companies all over the world rise and fall; this is mostly due to a lack of effective management and leadership. Management and leadership are often mistaken for one another, but the true definitions indicate that the two are as different as night and day, yet still remain part of one another. In leading companies, the need for effective communication is critical, as it promotes and allows the enhancement of achievements. NASA embarked on one of the most complex projects to date, namely the Apollo Program (1967–1975). This project consisted of many elements, in which communication played a major role. The project was a success, yet it was accomplished with only rotary dial phones and typewriters as communication channels. Therefore, communication and the effective action behind it could affect the success of a project or company. Communication within an organisation is seen as a vital resource. However, in reality it sometimes happens that insufficient attention is dedicated to the concept, process, and content of communication in the workplace, thus leading to the intended message being misunderstood. The managing of this resource is required to have a basic objective, in covering all communication facets within an organisation, and its immediate environment. Success in communicating efficiently and effectively requires a change of values within the culture of the organisation. This document elucidated on new investigations through empirical research to provide solutions to questions such as: “What makes a project successful?” “What does effective communication endorse?”; and “What is the link between success and effective communication?” To deliver a conclusive answer for the key objective of this investigation, which is to endorse new ways of thinking in the project management sector. , M.Ing. - Description: M.Com. (Business Management) , The outcome of the study was to explore the use of neuro linguistic programming as a communication tool that enhances communication in the workplace, and the results revealed that NLP business communications differ from the usual workplace communications. They involve communications that identify explicit and achievable outcomes, use sensory awareness to notice responses and flexibly alter behaviour to achieve outcomes. Participants were noticing and discovering new awarenesses to their communications, which they didn't realise, were available to them. Participants revealed their learnings about communication, their realities and experiences. The study discusses NLP as a communicative toolbox for business where different tools are used, depending on the context and outcome desired. It is a toolbox that brings flexibility and adaptability to solving problems and enhances our current communicative faculties. NLP as a communication tool for management is unpacked through the four primary functions of management. Communication is seen at the core. The literature reveals how the NLP tools and models can be applied across these communicative contexts: Planning: delivering strategic value with NLP; Organising: building a dynamic organisation with NLP; Leading: mobilising people with NLP; and Controlling: Dealing with change. The study highlights interpersonal and intrapersonal communications. The external communication takes place where managers, employees and the other various business stakeholders communicate with each other (interpersonal), and the internal communication (intrapersonal), within the environment even more important than the external, the manager’s mind. Internal communication plays an important role in the quality of our communications.

- Description: M.Phil. , Orientation: Personal experience of leadership within a religious community in Southern Africa and a preliminary literature review indicates that Personal Interpersonal and Professional Leadership (PIPL) mastery in Southern Africa needs an African spiritual consciousness (ASC) to strengthen its relevance. Conceptualising ASC requires an immersion into the narrative world of an African person to discover insights that can inform PIPL mastery within this context. Research purpose: the aim of the study is to conceptualise ASC within PIPL using the life history of an African in order to discover African insights on PIPL mastery. Motivation for the study: Current leadership literature on PIPL mastery does not sufficiently embrace ASC. This gap poses a challenge to the facilitation of PIPL mastery and potential realisation in the complex Southern African leadership context. Research design: The study employed a modernist qualitative methodology and constructivist paradigm as its research approach. A case study was used as a research strategy and a life history was used as a qualitative research technique. Purposeful sampling was employed in finding a storyteller and data was collected using solicited and unsolicited sources. Main findings: The study yielded a life history with a rich and varied description of how an African person experience of PIPL mastery. An analysis of the collected data revealed themes that can inform PIPL mastery with insights from an African experience and understanding of PIPL mastery. Practical implications: The conclusions of the study raise awareness on the particular themes for consideration within the PIPL perspective and necessitate a further inquiry into the journey of PIPL mastery from an ASC. Anticipated contribution: The study provides some understanding of how an African person understands and experiences PIPL mastery. This study adds to the relatively small base of qualitative research available on ASC and contributes to literature within PIPL programme by highlighting the potential themes for further exploration and research. Key Words: Personal Interpersonal and Professional Leadership (PIPL), Mastery, Africa(n), African Spiritual Consciousness, life-history, identity and facilitation, connectedness, grounded theory, African worldview storyteller and qualitative research

The perception of top communicators of senior management's expectations of excellent communication in South African organisations
- Authors: De Beer, Estelle
- Date: 2012-02-27

- Type: Thesis

- Description: M.A. , Communication departments may have the core knowledge to practise excellent communication, but senior management must also share a common understanding of the role and function of communication and communication managers in an organisation for communication to be excellent. The need for this study originated from the perception that the top communicator is often not at the table when strategic decisions are made. Yet, public relations specialists often have expertise that can contribute to organisational decision-making. They can, amongst others, facilitate dialogue between key publics and members of senior management in order to enhance understanding of the vision and goals of the organisation and the needs of the organisation's clients and stakeholders. This form of two-way symmetrical communication is the basis of excellent communication. Most practitioners agree that the best place for the top communicator is within an organisation's senior management - taking part in strategic decision-making through two-way communication (Dozier, Grunig, L & Grunig, J, 1995). The three spheres of communication excellence - as identified in the Excellence Study, the largest and most intensive investigation ever conducted of public relations and communication management - include the knowledge base of communication departments; shared expectations between the top communicator and senior management; and the culture of the organisation. The middle sphere of shared expectations between the top communicator and semor management, has three components which will be investigated in this study. The first component is departmental power - the ability to influence members of senior management. Sometimes top communicators are members of senior management, participating directly in strategic management and planning. In other cases, they exert informal influence as providers of information and as process facilitators to senior management. The power of the public relations department is associated with the value members of senior management attach to public relations as a function, as well as the strategic contribution the top communicator and the communication department make to organisational decision-making.

- Description: South Africa has in the last 13 years experienced rapid changes in various spheres including the political, social and economic spheres. These changes constantly pose a challenge to the status quo and more so, in the socio-economic arena. This implies that, in business, the impact of utilising all the available resources, in particular the human resources efficiently, has to be constantly reviewed in line with these changes. Women as part of the previously marginalised human resource are increasingly raising questions about their roles and their participation in the economy of the country. Various organisations such as the Commission on Gender Equality, Gender Links, Business Women’s Association and many other state agencies are creating opportunities that allow women to debate and express women’s issues and concerns constructively. These issues and concerns range broadly from matters on health, safety, education, employment and so on, to specific issues that affect particular sectors, in this instance, issues affecting women in the corporate communication environment. In this study the manner in which women in the filed of corporate communication perceive their roles is examined. A qualitative strategy is used to explore the perceptions of all the selected participants who practise corporate communication in various industries, in the Greater Johannesburg area. The criteria and method of selecting the sample is clarified in the research methodology section. Existing literature about the field of corporate communication and about the roles of women in the workplace is reviewed to obtain understanding of the current scenario. The theories of feminism are also studied carefully in order to gain in-depth understanding about the relevant theoretical framework. The outcome of this study will be utilised to advance debates and dialogues about the status and role of women not only in the corporate communication environment, but also in the socio-political and socio-economic spheres. , Dr. Ilse Niemann-Struweg
