- Description: In Johannesburg, areas like Sophiatown and Westbury, part of the Western Areas, continue to fulfil apartheid intentions 20 years after South Africa’s first democratic elections. I begin this article by describing the layout of Johannesburg. I then go on to frame the more than 100-year history of the Western Areas into five key states of growth and change. Changes to the landscape are presented as urban design ‘actions’ and are analysed in terms of spatial justice theory, both regarding guiding policies and resultant urban forms (such as dividing buffer strips). The stages of growth include the 1904 to 1919 period characterised by the creation of a transport grid for the town; the era 1918 to 1948, as Sophiatown and Western Native Township took shape; the period of high apartheid from 1948 to 1985; and the dismantling of apartheid spatial policies in the post-1985 period. This final section of this article will also include an account of the most recent spatial policy developments in the Western Areas, branded in 2012 as the ‘Corridors of Freedom’.

Patterns of use have altered and so has the social demography of the city and the urban fringes_ "The large business sector continues to move to the suburbs in a bid to find growth and security to be replaced with small retail outlets lessening the amount of money available to the Johannesburg council to revamp the CBD". Finance Week, Politics and Urban Renewal, June 19-25 1997, p17. Depressed areas, areas Jacking council funding within the city need to attention to divert possible neglect, to restore greater confidence within the business sector. The Doornfontein area of Johannesburg is one such area with a new collective vision created by the community, professionals, business, and local and provincial government, may possibly lead the CBD on a road to recovery. This eclectic area consisting of commerce, retail, commercial, educational, light-industry, and housing sectors, all working independently from one another and from the rest of the CBD could possibly benefit from a unified urban renewal project incorporating all sectors of the community. Doornfontein and Johannesburg's "metropolitan system is presently facilitating urban decay". Finance Week, A Tale of Two Cities, September 0410 1997, p16…

- Description: M.Tech. (Architectural Technology) , This thesis deals with the reappropriation of an existing parking garage into a language institute at Constitution Hill. Through the generation of a flu id conversation between architecture and people this thesis aims to address the underlying social miscommunication present within South African society through a socially motivated architectural manifestation. The underlining aim of this thesis will be the generation of a socially orientated architectural platform that allows and encourages cross-pollination. This architectural platform will revolve around and investigate the many opportunities that language offers asa social mediator and how these opportunities can aid in the democratization of identity generation. This new approach will be more representative of the complex multicultural society that is present within South Africa and as a result will end up being more democratic in nature.
