However, there is scant literature focusing on aspects of workers’ safety performance (SP) relating to their unhealthy and unsafe eating behavior. The paper presents findings on an exploratory factor analysis of H&S performance measures. A 10- item questionnaire which was developed after an extensive literature review was used to collect empirical data on SP of construction workers in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Results showed that SP could be reasonably measured by two constructs. The two constructs were clearly defined as trailing and prevailing. The emerged trailing measures were named lagging indicators while the prevailing ones were designated as leading indicators. The results lend support to extant literature which advocates the use of both leading and lagging safety performance indicators for effectively assessing construction workers’ safety performance. The study provides evidence which could be beneficial in psychometric evaluation of construction workers’ safety performance and behaviours on construction sites.

However, little attention is being given to the nutrition of construction workers in South Africa and indeed Africa, both in research and in practice. This paper presents findings on the nutritional intake of construction workers and the determinants which contribute to the predominant intake amongst construction workers. Empirical data were collected through a field questionnaire survey conducted on site construction workers in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Participants were selected using heterogeneity and convenience sampling techniques. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 22 software. Mean values and standard deviation were computed. The rank of the foods and determinants was established. Findings revealed that construction workers’ nutrition consisted mainly of meat and corn meal. Other frequently consumed food items were found to be fruits and vegetables. The study also found that nutritional knowledge, as well as economic and physiological factors were significant determinants of food choices and intake amongst construction workers. The study will increase awareness about the contribution of nutrition in H&S performance improvement. In addition, design of explicit nutrition intervention programmes will be guided, taking cognizance of the determinants of construction workers’ food choices. By highlighting the nutritional intake of construction workers and the determinants of their food choices, relevant and effectual intervention programmes can be designed for nutrition improvement and in turn, construction health and safety performance improvement. In addition, nutrition will be given more attention in health and safety considerations on construction sites.

The objective of this paper is to identify critical factors which should ideally be included in feasibility studies for adequate prediction of performance of road projects while in operation. A thorough in-depth desk study was conducted using extant literature (from conference proceedings and journals) and reports on feasibility and performance of transport infrastructure projects in Africa and world over. Findings revealed that effectiveness of procurement and financing strategies was the most considered factor during feasibility studies, among the sampled studies; followed by public participation, role of national government and traffic demand factors. Other factors included project environment, planning for operations and effectiveness of plans. These findings will be beneficial to investors who need assurance of the worthwhile performance of transport projects in which they intend to invest in. The study will inform selection of worthwhile projects among alternative and competing options which need to be implemented with limited resources.

Despite the importance of housing and basic services, they are a difficult problem for any country. With ever-growing global population and urbanization, existing urban housing infrastructure is insufficient in addressing housing needs in many economies. This paper examines the problem of housing and basic infrastructure delivery and identifies factors which hinder development and eradication of urban residential infrastructure backlogs. A review of literature related to housing and urban development was conducted from published and unpublished literature, based on international and South African context. The study found that barriers to the eradication of the massive housing and basic services backlogs include issues related to governance, incapacity/incompetence, corruption, contradictory policies and systems, stakeholder dynamics, difficult and often cumbersome processes of acquiring critical resources such as land, finance, and political consent/support. By identifying these factors as they relate to urban housing and related infrastructure provision, relevant policies could be designed to help improve housing and basic services delivery.

Nutritional quality and health and safety performance in the South African construction industry

- Description: Abstract: Nutrition is linked with construction worker health and safety (H&S) performance. Some accidents, injuries and in some cases, deaths on construction sites are direct or indirect results of physical and psychological distresses (chronic health conditions and mental instability) arising from poor nutrition of construction workers. However, despite the undeniable contribution of nutrition to H&S performance improvements, there seems to be very little research on the nutrition of construction workers, especially in South Africa. The study therefore investigated the predominant nutritional intake of construction workers in the Gauteng Province of South Africa, the factors which influence the predominant intake, and the influence of nutrition on worker safety performance, and recommended possible interventions to improve construction workers‟ nutrition. A theoretical framework showing interrelationships between nutrition and its influencing factors as well as between nutrition and safety performance was developed based on the literature reviewed. Empirical data was collected through a field questionnaire survey. The questionnaire, which was first piloted, was administered to construction workers in order to determine how often they consumed various foods in a week, the factors which influenced their food choice and their safety performance on construction sites. Reliability test (Cronbach‟s alpha) was applied to the measurement sub-scales. Using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 software, empirical data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Principal components analysis (PCA) and multiple regression analysis (MRA) were used to analyse the data. Results revealed that construction workers‟ weekly consumption consisted mainly of corn meal, meat, fruits and vegetables. Nutritional knowledge, culture and resources were found to influence construction workers‟ nutrition. Other influencers were economic factors as well as personal ideas and systems. Nutrition was indicated to influence leading safety performance, whereas no significant effect was found on lagging safety performance. This research provides valuable evidence for improving the nutrition of construction workers and thus H&S performance on construction sites. The objective of the current study is to validate a structure of transportation project sustainability measures to evaluate projects and ensure continual delivery of intended benefits in the long run. Design Empirical data were collected using a field questionnaire survey developed from literature review and a preliminary qualitative inquiry. A total of 132 built environment professionals were included based on purposeful and snowball sampling techniques. A model-generating confirmatory factor analysis was undertaken to validate underlying structures of sustainability measures. Findings The findings validated that a four-factor structure, with eleven variables, could adequately measure transportation infrastructure project sustainability (PS). The CFA structure achieved construct, convergent and discriminant validity, with fewer variables than theorised and established in the exploratory factor analysis. Value The validated four-factor structure is envisaged to be beneficial to transportation infrastructure project stakeholders in better decision-making with regard to selecting worthwhile projects as well as monitor operational projects with the aim of delivering long-term benefits to generations of users.
