- Description: MEET THE AUTHOR, KOPANO MATLWA @ YOUR CAMPUS IN AUGUST PERIOD PAIN by Kopano Matlwa ABOUT THE BOOK: In Period Pain, Kopano has poignantly captured the heartache and confusion of so many South Africans who feel defeated by the litany of headline horrors; xenophobia, corrective rape, corruption and crime and for many “the death sentence” that is the public health nightmare. Period Pain is a compelling story about how the broken continue to survive and it also helps us navigate our South Africa. We meet Masechaba, and through her story we are able to reflect, to question and to rediscover our humanity. South Africa never was, nor ever will be the Rainbow Nation we believed Mandela dreamt about. But we’ve woken up and grown up and we’re trying to come to terms with this reality. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Kopano Matlwa stole South Africa’s heart with her debut novel Coconut. With almost 25 000 sales, this award-winning title cemented her position as one of SA’s bestselling authors. With her follow-up novel, Spilt Milk, Kopano continued to amaze us with her ability to intimately address complex political issues through relatable characters. Kopano is one of South Africa’s most vibrant young writers and winner of the European Union Literary Award 2007. A medical graduate, Kopano is the author of the critically acclaimed novel Coconut, and Spilt Milk which won the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in 2010. “Roadmap for sustainable biofuels / bioenergy in Southern Africa regulatory frameworks for improved development potential?”
- Authors: Modise, Theodorah

- Subjects: Dr. Thembakazi Mali , Biofuel plants , Biofuels regulations

- Description: UJ Library in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) invites you to a book launch: “Roadmap for Sustainable Biofuels / Bioenergy in Southern Africa: RegulatoryFrameworks for Improved Development Potential?” ABOUT THE BOOK: The book has been a cooperation project between KAS, the Development and Rule of Law Programme (DROP), the Biofuels Research Chair and Water Institute at University of Stellenbosch for the last two years. Many studies have shown the growing need to produce cleaner energy and to stop climate change. Agenda 21, the Kyoto Protocol and other international agreements and determining national policy documents, emphasise the need to search for sustainable energy solutions and replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. Biofuels could increasingly become part of a sustainable solution to a wide range of challenges – environmental sustainability in the face of climate change, energy security, rising geographical instability and increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The book gives an overview of the scientific background of bioenergy and takes a critical look at possible risk factors for the environment and society by biofuel plants. A closer look is taken at the “socio-enviro-economic” impacts of biofuels with a focus on southern Africa. Furthermore the book provides a background on biofuel regulations from a comparative law perspective. The book aims to outline the potential to develop biofuels as one solution for climate change, energy security and socio-economic challenges. PRESENTERS: Henning Suhr, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung South Africa Professor Dr. Oliver Ruppel, Director Climate Policy and Energy Security Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Olga Chauke, Department of Energy DISCUSSANT: Njabulo Kambule, Energy Studies Lecturer – University of Johannesburg DATE: 02 May 2017 TIME: 09:00 to 11:00 VENUE: Chinua Achebe Auditorium (6th Floor), APK Library, University of Johannesburg (corner Kingsway and University Road, Auckland Park) RSVP: B DISCLAIMER: All events taking place in this venue may be photographed y Tuesday, 02 May 2017 to Theodorah Modise on licevents@uj.ac.za / 011 559 2264

- Description: UJ Department of Sociology, UJ SARChi Chair: African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy and the UJ Library in partnership with Jacana Media, invite you to a discussion about Cricket with Ashwin Desai and André Odendaal based on the books: Reverse Sweep: A Story of South African Cricket Since Apartheid Cricket and Conquest: The History of South African Cricket Retold, Volume 1: 1795-1914 by André Odendaal, Krish Reddy, Christopher Merrett and Jonty Winch ABOUT THE BOOKS: Reverse Sweep is an account of cricket in post-apartheid South Africa; from the tumultuous Gatting tour in which, ironically, the seeds of cricket unity were sown, to the Hansie Cronje saga and the change of leadership from Ali Bacher to Gerald Majola, and more recently to Haroon Lorgat. Cricket and Conquest and its companion volumes explain how racism came to be built into the very fabric of cricket’s ‘culture’ and ‘traditions’, and how it was uncannily tied to the broader historical processes that shaped South Africa. The unique experiences of our different cricket communities are described in ways that have not been done before.
