- Description: BestRed, an imprint of HSRC Press, in partnership with the UJ Library, invites you to a discussion with MICHAEL SCHMIDT, the author of A Taste of Bitter Almonds: Perdition and Promise in South Africa. ABOUT THE BOOK: A Taste of Bitter Almonds is a challenging new view from the ground on race and class that interrogates the continuities between apartheid’s autocracy and today’s troubled democracy in the world’s most unequal society. The book’s themes of identity, dispossession, and reclamation are grounded in the colonial era: examining the multiracial nature of settler colonisation and the First Nations Genocide sets the scene for an exploration of the maintenance of apartheid geography and conditions of exclusion under democracy, from zama-zama coal-miners and poor whites, to prostitutes and pogromists, witches and wastrels, lesbians and land claimants. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Michael Schmidt is an investigative journalist, anarchist militant, free press activist and published historian. He is the co-author, with Prof Lucien van der Walt, of Black Flame: the Revolutionary Class Politics of Anarchism and Syndicalism (USA, 2009), and the author of Cartography of Revolutionary Anarchism (USA, 2013), and of Drinking with Ghosts: the Aftermath of Apartheid’s Dirty War (SA, 2014). Where is the government while the buildings burn, and do the students know how to end the protests? Former Free State University Vice-Chancellor Jonathan Jansen delves into the unprecedented disruption of universities that caught South Africa by surprise. In frank interviews with eleven of the VCs most affected, he examines the forces at work, why the protests escalate into chaos, and what is driving – and exasperating – our youth. This urgent and necessary book gives us an insider view of the crisis, tells us why the conflict will not go away and what it means for the future of our universities.

- Description: The Department of Journalism, Film and Television in partnership with the UJ Library invites you to a discussion with Jani Allan, the author of Jani Confidential – A Memoir About the book: Those who remember the Just Jani column in the Sunday Times will be intrigued and delighted. Those who missed out on those heady times will be captivated by this universal story of betrayal, back-stabbing and life in the very fast lane. It is acerbic, witty, wry, bittersweet and exquisitely penned. She describes how she became a columnist, and reveals much of life behind the scenes at the Sunday Times. Jani shares details of the crucial interview with Eugène Terre’blanche, details that will shake the preconceptions and ruffle more than a few feathers. Jani’s reputation is reduced to tatters when she takes on UK’s Channel4 in a law suit that reverberated around the world and kept the public baying for blood. But in all this we are able to see the real Jani Allan behind the fabulous brittle creature that the tabloids tore to shreds and devoured and then spat out. - Subjects: Leon, Tony. Opposite Mandela , Landsberg, Chris, Prof.
- Type: Presentation
- Identifier: uj:1140 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/13595
- Description: The UJ SARCHI Chair: African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy in partnership with the UJ Library invites you to meet Tony Leon, the author of the book Opposite Mandela: Encounters with South Africa’s Icon About the book: Opposite Mandela relates the untold stories of how South Africa’s first democratic president related to his political opponents. Insightful, and simultaneously serious and amusing, it lifts the veil on many unknown or unexplained benchmarks from that era: the personal animosity between Mandela and FW De Klerk, the decision of the Democratic Party to reject Mandela’s offer of a seat in his cabinet and whether the extraordinary outreach of Mandela to the minorities was the shrewd calculation of a latter-day Machiavelli or the genuine impulses of a secular political saint. This highly readable and first-hand account considers in a balanced manner both the golden moments and the blind spots of one of the most consequential presidencies and leaders of the modern democratic age. About the author: Tony Leon was a member of the South African Parliament for nearly 20 years, for 13 of those leading the Democratic Alliance. He subsequently served as South Africa’s ambassador to Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay from 2009 to 2012. FACILITATOR Prof Chris Landsberg, University of Johannesburg
