Residents’ perceptions and attitudes towards urban tourism product offerings in Harare, Zimbabwe. African Journal of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure, 6(4):1-15. , ISSN: 2223-814X
- Description: Abstract: The main objective of the study in this article was to evaluate the perceptions of some Harare residents on urban tourism product offerings, particularly with regards to the current state of tourism product offerings and their contribution to the residents’ livelihoods. A questionnaire technique was used to meet the objective of the study, in which the residents’ perceptions were measured on a five-point Likert scale. A total of 246 respondents were interviewed, with the findings proving that their perceptions about tourism offerings were generally negative. The results show that the highest perception score was for the item “the current tourism policy of Harare allows for the residents to engage in tourism activities” (2.72), whereas the lowest perception score was for the item “I am happy with the current quality of tourism offerings in Harare” (1.88). With regards to the results, the study concludes that there could be a lack of STD, which is considered an overall objective of tourism development, and this raises concerns in relation to the well-being of the residents in Harare. With regard to the results, the study identified the ZTA as the main stakeholder with the mandate to address such issues identified in the study, in which three recommendations were put forward: (1) To formulate a tourism policy that promotes effective community involvement; (2) to promote local investment in tourism, which could serve to attract the community members and to boost their participation in tourism activities; and (3) to promote domestic tourism to the residents in such a way as to change how the residents perceive tourism offerings in the country.

- Description: M.A. , Abstract: In contemporary times, tourism has acquired a significant place of importance in enhancing the socio-economic and environmental status of the countries of the world. A key pillar in the development of any tourism destination globally is the tourism offerings that it fosters. The range of tourism offerings at a destination defines the destinations’ attractiveness and competitiveness, as well as the tourism experiences involved. Tourism stakeholders at a destination level have the mandate to plan, develop, market and manage these tourism offerings in such a way that promotes sustainable tourism development. The purpose of this study was to determine the stakeholders’ views on tourism offerings in Harare, Zimbabwe, with a view to proposing a framework of recommendations, based on the findings, on the planning, policy and strategy implementation undertaken by the relevant governmental organisations towards the igniting of tourism development in Zimbabwe. A stratified random sampling technique was used for the residents, and a total of 246 questionnaires was administered. In terms of the tourists involved, the respondents were surveyed using a convenience sampling method, with a total of 223 questionnaires being administered. For the ten key stakeholders interviewed, the researcher employed a simple random sampling technique in relation to the tourism business, and a purposive sampling technique for the tourism authorities. The results obtained in the study were based on the views of such stakeholders. The quantitative data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), and qualitative data were analysed through contextualising the generated views from the key informants. The views of the stakeholders were found to be generally negative. While the residents indicated a lack of community involvement in tourism development of Harare and highlighting that tourism is not developed to cater for their needs, tourists ranked the tourism tourism offerings of Harare as of low quality and rated these offerings as equally essential priotities in the tourism product development. The key respondents lamented that there is underulisation of tourism resources and a weakling infrastructure, coupled with variables such as political and economic environment negatively influencing tourism development in Zimbabwe. With regards to the above, the study recommended that a comprehensive tourism policy for Zimbabwe’s tourism, as reflective of all stakeholders’ views, interests and concerns, be developed with the guidance of stakeholders from a successful tourist destination. The study proposes that future research be undertaken to complement the current study, as well as to add to the existing limited amount of literature on the importance of urban tourism and stakeholder views in terms of tourism development.

- Description: Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to determine the stakeholders’ assessments of tourism policy, and the state of tourism product development in Zimbabwe. The study is argued from the perspective that stakeholder views on tourism have remained an under-researched phenomenon in sub-Saharan Africa. Adopting an exploratory qualitative study design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with key tourism stakeholders identified by way of a purposive sampling technique. From the interviews, key issues that came to the fore, were that the tourism policy of Zimbabwe was said to be outdated, the distribution of tourism offerings limited, the economic performance poor, and the state of tourism offerings in the country having been negatively influenced by the political instabilities wracking the country. The study provides some insights into the importance of the role of tourism stakeholders in terms of policy formulation, planning and strategy implementation.
