- Description: M.Comm. (Strategic Management) , The volatile and politically challenging climate in which business has to operate during the period of transition to representative government and a subsequent non-apartheid political dispensation in South Africa calls for a new innovative approach towards corporate social involvement. The challenge posed is no less than to make a visible and adequate contribution towards the socio-economic and socio-political reconstruction and development ofthe country. The ultimate purpose of this involvement by business in development is to create an environment which will be conducive to economic growth and profitable business. The socio-economic realities of the South African society dictate the focus and direction of corporate social involvement programmes, but the perceptions and opinions of the major stakeholders in development including the political and social role players within the recipient domain - are also to be recognised. For a social involvement programme to be effective and efficient, three major areas of involvement have been identified. As a corporate citizen a company has a responsibility to assist in the maintenance of society through grants and donations to non-governmental organisations and development agencies. It also has an obligation to render support to existing development projects and to create appropriate support mechanisms and programmes to facilitate development. In the process the private sector provides a delivery system for the transfer of technology from its source to appropriate recipients. One of the most significant obstacles preventing accelerated development is, however, is the lack of institutional capacity within local communities. The private sector, therefore, must also focus on people centered development and the establishment of appropriate processes to enhance socio-economic as well as socio-politlcal development. With all the resources vested within the company - not in the corporate social involvement function only, but also in other disciplines - business has a substantial contribution to make. This study focuses on the development of an integrated approach towards corporate social involvement, including the integration of internal and external resources within the influence sphere of the company. It also endeavours to develop an integrated development process to bring about synergy between traditionally opposing sides of the socio-political arena in South Africa. It departs from the central premises that people who depend on each other for economic survival and growth, have to co-operate, regardless of the political, cultural or religious differences between them. Research has been based on experience in the workplace and interaction with a wide variety of practitioners in the corporate social involvement field. The study concludes that South Africa needs to address the issues prohibiting real economic growth, including the socio-economic and socio-political deficiencies, with vigour if the country is to become a strong contender in the world economy. The private sector can only make a substantial contribution through its social involvement programmes if an integrated approach is followed to empower the programme. This does not imply unnecessary increases in social budgets during periods of economic decline. Through the integrated development process which is developed in the study, the expertise, organisation, financial resources and facilities of all the role players external and internal to the company - are mobilised to accept joint responsibility and ownership for the development of their own destinies.

- Description: M.Com. (Enterprise Management) , South African managers will in future be more exposed to the turbulent environment as experienced by their overseas counterparts. The application of the strategic management process by competent management could enhance the organisation's chances to succeed. A number of local studies have proven that South African managers are lacking experience in the strategic management process. Few organisations can afford the losses that may arise through bad decisionmaking by inexperienced managers. The only alternative is to supply quality management training and development programmes. Management training for South African managers of the nineties should be adapted for local conditions without losing sight of internationally applicable principles. At the same time alternative methods of training and education should be investigated. Computer Based management simulations can be cost effectively applied in the preparation of management for the nineties. The purpose of this study is to determine the requirements for an appropriate computer based management simulation for the training of South African managers in the strategic management process. The process of strategic management and the identification of the strategic issues relevant to the South African manager are specifically addressed

- Description: M.Com. (Business Management) , The traditional investment appraisal decision making process is no longer the most appropriate within the context of the rapid changes that are occurring within the business world of our time. A swiftly changing environment necessitates the need for a new approach to investment appraisal decisions. "Efforts must be made to provide a system that would provide management with the tools, thereby allowing the most attractive investment alternative" and truly seeing the future of the business. A dynamic, unpredictable and swiftly changing context provide for challenging and researching the underlying assumptions on which traditional Investment Approval decisions have been based. This study is thus directed at acquiring an understanding of how Computerised Knowledge Based Systems could provide assistance to organisations by timeously analysing the variables involved and then providing feedback which would allow the organisation to choose the projects that would provide higher than average rates of return, and fit strategically with existing corporate policy. At its very broadest, this study seeks to determine how investment appraisal decisions can be improved through the use of Knowledge Based Systems...

- Description: M.Com. (Business Management) , The opportunity to create a case where students can apply their knowledge and insight pose a number of challenges. The purpose of this study was to create a case study that encapsulates various management opportunities and dilemmas that businesses face on a daily basis and explore possible questions and solutions, as well as reflect on the output ofthe process. This mini-dissertation starts by orientating the reader regarding the objective of the study, method followed and academic overview. It includes an overview of the evaluation criteria required to test the use and applicability of the case study. The case study "SwisslT: New horizons in stormy waters" is presented with a number of critical questions. A facilitation manual follows the case study and provides a structured grouping of the questions, an overview of didactic principles and discusses possible answers. The dissertation concludes with an evaluation of the case study and the answers by summarising the input received from facilitators, practicing managers and a management consultant. The conclusion drawn from this study is that the utilisation ofcase studies and the case method is not limited to only being a teaching tool. The process ofcreating and evaluating a case has value in itself. It not only supports the constructivist approach to teaching, but it also creates a platform for the identification offuture research topics as incorporated at the end of this study.

- Description: M.Com. , The study was conducted with the primary purpose of developing, within the framework of business management, with specific reference to strategic management, a management approach for combl-taxi facilities. Currently no formal approach for the efficient management and operation of combi-taxi facilities exists. The management and operation of combi-taxi facilities occurs on an ad hoc basis, is fragmented and restricted to only a few functions that are executed. Existing combi-taxi facilities are, however, a management and financial burden for the owner (traditionally a local authority) and gave reason to the physical deterioration' of the infrastructure and poor or insufficient management and operation thereof. The quality of combi-taxi services are dependent on the standard of combi-taxi facilities and related activities. In this study a systems approach was followed for the development of a holistic approach for the management and operation of combi-taxi facilities. The objectives of this management approach from a business perspective are the creation of self supporting combi-taxi facilities that are efficiently managed and operated, as well as an effective management structure with a healthy income base. Management, as the nucleus of the successful functioning of combi-taxi facilities in the context of this study, is regarded as the planning of and the organizing, leading and control of persons in the business which are responsible for the operation of the combi-taxifacility through the execution of activities and tasks within the relevant business functions, to ensure the optimal utilisation of scarce resources and the achievement of goals.

- Description: M.Com. (Business Management) , The business environment requires more emphasis on decision making as a result of ever increasing competition. The decision making process must therefore be speeded up in order to make companies more competitive. This places more pressure on decision makers and allows for fewer mistakes. Decisions on executive level are made by the executive committee. Executives concentrate inevitably more on those decisions that have a major impact on the company and their decision-making ability has obvious implications for the success of the organisation. It is vital that decisions are taken effectively with clearly defined elements through a distinct order of steps. The decision-making process starts with the observation of the business environment and the subsequent formation of opinions of .various situations found therein. Needs and opportunities are identified by being constantly aware of activities in this environment. The identification of needs and opportunities should be a conscious and continuous process for management. The next step in the decision-making process is the setting of specific goals to be achieved by the decision. Goals are set to establish what must be achieved by such a decision. Certain goals must be met and others are set in order to evaluate different altematives. Different goals, which could range from primary to operational goals. should therefore be set and it is important that goals for a particular decision are supportive of the primary company goals. Goals are valuable as a standard against which alternatives can be evaluated. The development of different alternatives from which a choice has to be made enhances the quest for an optimal solution to a need or opportunity. The decision-making process must be a logical and orderly process in order to enable the decision maker to make an optimal decision. De Bono's (1985) "Six Thinking Hats" provides a logical method of decision-making by a group. By practicing the "Six Thinking Hats" principle a group of decision makers can develop alternatives to come to a decision in a systematic way without the normal customary conflict inherent in group decision making. The choice between the different alternatives is the last step in the decision-making process. The decision makers must compare the different alternatives with predetermined standards to be able to establish the optimal choice. These standards include historical, external and optimal standards as well as the maintenance of the status quo. The final decision is made according to the degree that the alternative complies with the decision goals and to the degree of confidence that the decision-making team have in the forecast of the possible consequences of the alternative. Decisions on executive level are mostly concerned with the future and as such fairly uncertain. As a result of the ever increasing competition in the business environment and largely due to the rapid development of technology, the need for aids in decision-making is becoming more of a necessity with less room for mistakes. Forecasting is a decision-making aid that can be used by management in all the functional departments of the business. It is, however, important that there is communication between departments to ensure that the appropriate information is used in forecasting models. The choice of the appropriate forecasting technique depends on the characteristics of the forecasting situation and the characteristics of the forecasting technique. The forecasting technique is chosen according to the circumstances and the requirements of the particular situation that requires forecasting. The decisions that executives make are subject to both uncertainty as well as risk. The risks that are known to the decision makers can be quantified by adding probabilities to particular alternatives. The degree of risk that the executives are prepared to take depends on their attitude towards risk.

- Subjects: Housing -South Africa
- Type: Thesis
- Identifier: uj:11320 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/10912
- Description: M.Com. (Business Management) , The study was conducted to address a few of the fundamental factors that contributed to the present housing shortage in South Africa and also to emphasise certain aspects that may assist in the proper functioning of a future housing scheme in a post-apartheid South Africa. Substantial consensus has been reached by researchers that urbanisation should concentrate on employment creation, be development-oriented, and emphasise economic growth. Undesirable phenomena such as poverty, unemployment and the deterioration of land should be managed by the elimination of factors such as a high population increase, development backlogs and restrictions on mobility by means of long term strategies that are executed on a step by step basis. Affordable standards and realistic regulations for housing, physical infrastructure and social services should be implemented on an urgent basis to promote home ownership for all sectors of the market. The study substantiates the importance of the formulation of special programmes for the prevention and the reduction of housing backlogs as well as for the promotion of the upgrading of existing structures. All this must however be done within the financial ability of the state which in turn necessitates a substantial and urgent increase in contributions from the private sector.

The strategic implications of electronic commerce on business management
- Authors: Van Aardt, Albert Hibbert
- Date: 2014-02-10
- Subjects: Electronic commerce
- Type: Thesis
- Identifier: uj:3742 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/9120
- Description: D.Com. (Business Management) , In this study the impact of Electronic Commerce (EC) on the management of an organisation is researched, with the emphasis on Strategic Management. EC is the process whereby the exchange of business data is moved from the paper environment to the use of electronic media, and in particular, communications networks. EC is analysed, and special attention is given to one of its major components, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). The impact of EDI on the organisation is researched, and the possible benefits and dangers are discussed. As EC is such a new field, and one that depends very much on electronics, the danger does exist that management may look upon EC as a purely technical issue. In this study emphasis is therefore placed on the wide impact that EC has on the management function, and it is shown that the technical aspects are relatively of minor importance. The main argument of the thesis is that EC is not a technical issue, but a strategic business one.

- Description: M.Com. (Investment Management) , In the research of currency risk management it is important to note that currency risk management forms part of the overall risk management of business and authorised currency dealers. various hedging instruments exist with which currency risk can be managed. This study deals with the origin and the influence of currency fluctuations on business, and the management of such risk. Various factors exist which affect the level of exchange rates. In South Africa the most important factors affecting these rates are the gold price, the level of the American dollar and the degree of political stability. Since most of these factors do not fall within South Africa's control, but are mostly influenced by external factors, exchange rates can only be managed to a certain extent. This is possible through Reserve bank interference. Fluctuation in exchange rates exposes local companies and currency dealers to currency risk. Several techniques and instruments can be employed in currency risk management.

- Description: M.Com. (Business Management) , This study was conducted with the purpose of finding a thorough understanding, within the framework of business management, the integrating of the Information System strategy and Information Technology strategy, into the business strategy so as to move towards Strategic Information Systems. The individual enterprise needs more attention to participate in the implementation of the strategic planning process and the development of better techniques for the integrated Information Technology and strategic planning in the enterprise, and the increase in the management and control over Information Technology. Substantial consensus has been reached that an enterprise can only gain competitive advantage with the establishment of Strategic Information Systems. Most companies have an effective business strategy but those strategies are not integrated with the enterprise's Information System strategy and Information Technology strategy, and vice versa.

- Description: M.Com. , The study was conducted with the express purpose of finding thorough understanding, within the framework of bus i ness management, of the concept "corporate culture" and its function as a dimension of the management process. Substantial consensus has been reached by researchers that each enterprise has its own identifiable culture and that this culture ,has a very powerful infiuence on the management process and performance of the enterprise. Uncertainty however still exists regarding the manner in which this phenomenon succeeds to influence and how it can be manipulated to the benefit of a particular concern. A fact worth noting is that few researchers followed a systems approach in their studies of "corporate culture" and its extensive influence on the management process. Many researchers see "corporate culture" only as one isolated component of business management and therefore fail to explain the exact nature and influences of this phenomenon. In order to describe and analyse the concept "corporate culture" from the perspective of business management, a holistic approach forms the basis of this study. The findings hereof confirms the importance of "corporate culture" as an essential element of the process of business management. The concept of "corporate culture" cannot be separated from the business management process. Management thinking and corporate activities are influenced by cultural values and norms. Managers therefore have to take note of this phenomenon, gain knowledge thereof and strive to integrate the proactive managing of corporate culture into overall business management, in order to enhance the performance of their enterprise.
