The researcher formulated the following objectives towards the achievement of these goals: to present a theoretical perspective on foster care, on the ecological approach which was utilized in the development of the programme, and on programme evaluation; to develop the programme envisaged utilising the DR & U (Development Research and Utilization) model of Edwin Thomas; to evaluate the programme by inviting a group of foster parents, related to their foster children, to participate in the evaluation phase with a view to: * broadening the knowledge and insight of the participants on their foster care situation; * developing a more positive self-concept for programme participants, through improved insight into their foster care situation; * enhancing foster child-foster parent relationships through improved insight into the foster care situation; * improving the family relationships of the programme participants.

Lewensomstandighede van bejaardes in Kempton Park

- Description: M.A. , The basic assumption of this mainly exploratory study is that aging is a time of growth, creati vity and new opportunities. The aged person is an individual who has rights and experiences basic needs. The rendering of all services and provision of resources should take cognisance of these values. Furthermore it is the privilege of each aged person to be involved in the planning of the provision of such resources. This research project was further based on the assumptions contained in the ecological approach, with special reference to the life model evolved by Germain and Gitterman (1980). Central to this approach is the view that people, like all living organisms, together with their environment, form an ecosystem in which each shapes the other. At times, people change environments to make them conform to physical and psychological needs, and they must then adapt to the changes they have induced. At sti II other times, people adapt by seeking new environments - such as a congenial service centre. for the aged. The purpose of this study was to discover the aged in Kempton Park as a client system, to ascertain the quality of their lives and to establish a few guidel ines for the planning of future health and welfare services. A list of the names and addresses of all white persons aged 60 years and older and living within the municipal boundaries of Kempton Park was subsequently obtained from the Municipality of Kempton Park. A representative sample from this research population was drawn by means of a technique of random sampling, after eliminating aged persons already living in sheltered housing facilities. In order to obtain information on certain characteristics of the aged group in Kempton Park a carefully constructed questionnaire was mailed to 950 of the persons concerned.

'n Maatskaplikewerk-perspektief op die pasiënt in 'n psigiatriese hospitaal

- Type: Thesis

- Description: M.A. (Social Work) , This study involved qualitative research with 25 respondents in a psychiatric hospital. The purpose of the study was to gain a social work perspective on the patient in a psychiatric hospital. The research results led to the conclusion that the patient in a psychiatric hospital can be viewed from an ecological approach. This implies that the patient is viewed as being in transactional exchange with his environment. Stress is treated as a psychosocial condition generated by discrepancies between needs and capacities, on the one hand, and environment qualities on the other. Such stress arises in three interrelated areas of living, viz. life transitions, environmental pressures and interpersonal processes. Finally the researcher concluded that the life model of Germain and Gitterman (1980) can be employed to good advantage by the social worker as a practice model in interventitive work with the patient in a psychiatric hospital. This entails that the social worker fulfills certain specific roles, functions and tasks and utilizes certain skills in order to facilitate a goodness-of-fit between the needs and problems of the patient, and the characteristics of the environment, with the ultimate purpose of enhancing the adaptive capacities of the patient and of improving the quality of the environment of that patient...
