  • Description: Over 850 people attend events in the library in March! The month of March was very hectic for the events’ staff in the library. Six events were run in a period of two weeks, resulting in over 850 guests attending these events. We are very grateful for the support of volunteers who stayed until late at night to assist with the ushering of guests and with the clearing up afterwards. All the events were fully attended. The highlights were the public lecture with Minister Gigaba and the book discussion with Judge Cameron, which attracted the biggest audiences. Law students had a bumper month because three of the events involved speakers from the legal fraternity: Baroness Scotland, Judge Cameron, and David Bilchitz . The student assistants from the law section of the library also had hands on experience of events in the library when they ushered guests into the venue during the Judge Cameron book discussion. They did a splendid job indeed considering that over 200 people attended that discussion. It is also our pride when we promote books written or edited by our own UJ staff. Prof David Bilchitz and Prof Ashwin Desai from different departments within UJ, promoted the books they edited with great success.   • Description: Popular DJ Sbu breaks UJ Reads attendance records! More than 1500 students congregated to listen to their favourite radio presenter, DJ Sbu, during the UJ Reads week on all four UJ campuses. The Leadership 2020 book– The Beginning compiled by Sibusiso Leope, popularly known as DJ Sbu - was selected as the UJ Reads book for the second semester. Past attendance records for this project were between 200 and 300, with this one surpassing it with more than five times the normal figures. DJ Sbu is an Engineering Faculty Alumnus of the UJ who studied at DFC, and so it was a double honour for DFC Library to host him as an author and award winning role model to the students who attended the discussion. DJ Sbu graduated in 1996 in electrical engineering at the then TWR. His main message, which is also reflected in his book, is that young people need to stand up and follow their dreams. In doing so, they need to have guts, “Chutzpa” and confidence. He emphasised that the other ingredients for success are humility, knowledge, family orientation and providing solutions for societal challenges or problems. DJ Sbu - hosts the Sound Revival show on Metro FM and he appears on the most popular game show in the country, Friends Like These. He owns a number of businesses under the Blaque Gemini Group where he is the Co-founder and Executive Chairman. He is the Founder and Chairman of SLEF, the Sbusiso Leope Education Foundation which has given away 147 bursaries to pupils throughout 300 schools nationwide.

  • Description: The Library participated in various activities organised by the University for Mandela Day, including a visit to the Helen Joseph Hospital, to assist with cleaning the wards and feeding sick people. In addition, the four campus libraries held library specific activities to commemorate this special day. For APB/FADA Library, the celebration took an unusual turn when almost 100 students were treated to a free movie and popcorn in the library on Friday 18 July to celebrate the legacy of our iconic leader by watching “Long Walk to Freedom”, a movie showing the life of Nelson Mandela. Many have never had the opportunity to watch the movie before and appreciated the opportunity given to them by the library. APK Campus Library partnered with the Department of Information and Knowledge Management to commemorate Mandela Day by hosting Christo Brand in the newly built and beautiful “Deck at the Library” on Thursday 17 July. Christo Brand is the author of the book: Doing Life with Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend.

  • Description: Highlights: In commemorating 20 years of democracy in South Africa, a discussion was held at the APK Campus Library on April 16. The key speakers were Mr Pravin Gordhan, Minister of Finance; and Professor Steven Friedman, Director: Centre for the Study of Democracy, UJ. The discussion was facilitated by Professor Tinyiko Maluleke, Deputy Vice Chancellor: Internationalisation Advancement and Student Affairs, UJ and it was concluded with a vote of thanks by Professor Cheryl Hendricks, Professor in Political Science, UJ. The event was attended by over 200 guests who participated in a very robust interaction. Mr Gordhan traced the country’s journey from 1990 until 1994 – talking about the build up to the first democratic elec-tions. He spoke of the challenges of conducting the elections and that of forming the first democratic government. Currently, South Africa is firmly embedded in the global environment and is consequently confronted with global challenges and opportunities. While acknowledging that South Africa has not completely reached its goals, Mr Gordhan said that many positive strides had been made and that we had much to look forward to. He urged nation building and cooperation in all sectors of society to make South Africa a better place. Prof Friedman acknowledged that there had been a change in South Africa since 1994 – a positive change. However, he used the theory of path dependency to suggest that while things did in fact change, the arrangement of society and its institutions remained the same. The difference is the racial make-up of these institutions. Path dependency suggests that the more things change, the more they remain the same.The evening, which concluded on a positive note, was hosted jointly by the Transformation Unit, the Department of Politics and the Library. The Library in partnership with Higher Education South Africa, recently hosted a breakfast roundtable discussion with Prof John Goddard OBE. His topic ‘The role of universities in national and local development: insights from Europe and the OECD’ attracted a number of academics, who were fortunate to have a very close discussion with the professor. We also hosted Dr Robert Garris – Managing Director of the Rockefeller Foundation in NYC, in partnership with the DVC Research and Postgraduate Division. The aim of the visit was to strengthen ties between UJ and the Rockefeller Foundation. Among other things he promoted the Foundation’s Bellagio Centre residency and conference programmes. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Ihron Rensburg also invited Dr Robert Garris to a breakfast meeting with other members of the Executive Leadership Group ( Dr Mandla Msibi: Executive Director, Research and Innovation; Dr Rookaya Bawa: Executive Director, LIC; Prof Tshilidzi Marwala: DVC, Research and Postgraduate Studies). The Library plans to host more international speakers in line with the university’s mission of global partnerships and excellence.
