  • Description: M.Ed. , The research project hopes to achieve the following: What is the essence of learner recruitment as an aspect of school marketing? Which burning issues exist in the recruitment of learners as perceived by the principals of two secondary schools in Nzhelele West circuit office? How can these burning issues be addressed? The method envisaged in order to research the problem of learner recruitment will now be discussed. Selecting a paradigm. Qualitative research methods will be used in this study so as to allow the researcher to "share" in the understanding and perceptions of others and explore how people structure and give meaning to their daily lives (Stevens, 1993 : 66). In addition, qualitative data are sources of well founded, rich descriptions and "explanations of processes" occurring in local context (Miles & Huberman,1984 :12)

  • Authors: Mahamood, Abdul Samed
  • Date: 2012-08-14
  • Subjects: School publicity , Schools - Marketing , Schools - Public relations , Public schools - South Africa , School management and organization - South Africa - Decision making
  • Type: Mini-Dissertation

  • Description: M.A. , The purpose of this study is to determine what school marketing entails and furthermore to gauge the perceptions of public school principals on marketing and its implications on school management. Information pertaining to school marketing will be collected, inter alia, through the study of the relevant literature and through interviews with the principals of four schools. Through an analysis of the data collected from the literature study and interviews with the principals, guidelines will be provided on how principals of public schools can both create and maintain a marketing culture through effective management. The research does not propose to undertake any type of comparative international study of marketing in education. While the latter is worth pursuing, for the purpose of this research it is sufficient to note that de-zoning (open enrolment), cost cutting, deregulation and devolution of an increasing number of management functions of schools are the most immediate impulses behind the marketisation of public schooling in South Africa. In view of the stipulations of the South African Schools Act 84/1996 and the consequent need for schools to embark on a programme of marketing, the aims of this research study can be outlined as follows : To determine: 1.3.1 What school marketing is. 1.3.2 The perceptions of school principals on school marketing culture and its implications on management, and 1.3.3 how a school principal can create and maintain a marketing culture through effective management.

  • Description: Educational Management , South Africa is faced with educational transformation that is embedded in the current education policy. For this transformation to succeed, teachers, principals and those in the higher hierarchy in the Department of Education, will have to work together towards attaining the goals of Education. Teams are powerful learning entities than individuals seeking to learn on their own. Teams provide an environment which learning can be articulated, tested refined and examined against the needs of the organisation and within the context of the learning of others. To be effective, team based learning activity needs to be based upon the needs of the team, the needs of the individuals within the team and the needs of the organisation. By articulating these three sets of needs within the team, real progress and development will take place within an organisation. The principal should provide the staff with a forum where there is an interchange of information and the strengthening of relationships and the improvement of the school climate. Specific roles that relate to a specific task need to be clarified as well as those that relate to the team. Principals should realise that the role they play in a school is significant. Despite this significant role, they can never be solely responsible for the management of the school. To achieve excellence collective effort is needed. Involvement of team members in decision making will help in achieving the organisation's mission as well as the goals. This will result in the taking up of the school's ownership by all team members. Accountability will therefore be owned by all team members not only the principal. Team building can lead an organisation to success because it involves communication, effective coordination and division of labour. This will result in effective school management.

  • Description: M.Ed. (Education Management) , Abstract: There is a global recognition of employee involvement in decision-making processes; authoritarian styles of leadership and management are being discouraged. The same applies to South Africa. In 1996, the department of education (DOE) carried out an audit on management strategies used in South African public schools. It revealed that principals and teachers are mostly excluded from decision-making processes in schools and that schools mostly rely on authoritarian management approaches. The audit found that most school decisions were taken by “departmental officials” (DOE, 1996, p.19). In keeping with international trends, the DOE advocated for school based and participative decision-making practices, such as those embraced by organisational development (OD), to be used in South African schools. This study investigates teachers’ experiences and perceptions of change management strategies used in a South African independent high school. It was worthwhile conducting a study on change management strategies that are being used in South Africa’s independent schools as there is very little research that has been conducted in this area. This is a qualitative study, which follows the interpretive paradigm. It involves a case study that has been conducted in one of South Africa’s independent high schools. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were used to conduct individual and focus group interviews. Moreover, non-participant observations and document analysis were employed to triangulate data. The findings revealed that teachers are mostly excluded from the decision-making process as changes are invariably initiated by management. Research participants proposed for the school to adopt change management strategies which are shared and participative, diagnostic and that create change readiness. The teachers’ proposals are in line with the Department of Education’s proposal that schools should adopt an inclusive change management strategy such as OD.

  • Description: M. Ed. (Educational Management) , Schooling in South Africa has been influenced to a large extent by socio-economic and political factors which resulted in a wide variety of schooling systems with vastly differing frameworks and standards. This coupled with the high failure rate of South African students in the 1995 matriculation examination as reported in The Star reflects the need to critically examine the effectiveness of the teaching programme (Swart and Mothibeli, 1995: 1). The Provincialisation of Education in South Africa has introduced far reaching changes which is aimed at improving the quality of Education and also at achieving cost efficient and effective use of educational resources. In a series of articles carried in The Star, increasing educational budget, introducing a single matric examination, introducing practical curricula and implementing teacher upgrading programmes were cited as some of the priorities of the new education department (Anon, 1995: 5). - While the South African Education system undergoes radical changes the question concerning educational productivity and school finance continues internationally. Odden and Clune (1995: 6) stated that although the budgetary provisions for schools in the United States for the period 1960 to 1990 rose by 200% there was only a slight improvement in student achievement. Many significant studies have been conducted in the past few years on school development and on school improvement but views on teacher effectiveness still remain illusive (Dalin, 1994:10). In some instances it is related to occupational roles while for others it is focused on routine aspects of work activity...
