- Description: Abstract: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of accounting teachers regarding their professional identity when integrating technologies into their classroom practice. Located in the interpretivist paradigm, the study adopted the qualitative approach and phenomenology as the strategy of inquiry. Individual interviews were utilised as the data collection method. A total sample size of five accounting educators was used from purposefully sampled schools in the Gauteng’s district-12 province. The data analysis process followed a thematic approach through use of Atlas.ti. Among the key findings of the study was the view that accounting educators’ beliefs, values and practices shape their professional identity in practice. The conclusion drawn from the study was that, despite having an enormous quest for integrating ICT into the accounting curriculum to entrench their professional identity, accounting educators are sometimes constrained by the challenges they endure in integrating ICT into their accounting pedagogy. For example, and contrary to expectations, the degree of ICT integration within the accounting curriculum does not correspond directly with the availability of the hardware, software, or Internet connectivity in the schools. Further to this, the attitude of members of the School Management Teams (SMTs) in supporting the process of ICT integration in the accounting curriculum, was shown to have a limited encouraging effect. Informed by these constraints, the recommendations made include the need for the SMTs to ensure that the process of integrating ICT into the accounting curriculum and pedagogy is enhanced through targeted efforts to ensure computer availability, financial support and the presence of a sound ICT policy that supported the schools to devise strategies that ensure that ICT is integrated across all the accounting classes. The recommendations also point to the need for proper hardware and software infrastructure and connectivity options to support the accounting educators and learners in their schools. , M.Ed. - Description: M.Comm. , The principal aim of this study within the framework of Business Management is to determine whether or not South African companies that invest in Information Technology actually reap the fruit of their investments in the form of improved competitiveness in the industry in question. Successful companies in the developed countries of the world are conclusive proof of the fact that their investment in Information Technology is to their advantage, as their ability to gather, analyse and utilise information is dramatically improved. Their success is further supported by the unique abilities of Information Technology to help them establish interrelations with other firms, markets and products. The inherent abilities of and the rapid development within the information industry soon convince one of the fact that Information Technology does, indeed, have at its disposal the wherewithal to ensure that companies investing in IT become leaders in terms of their competitive position in the market. The deciding factor in the development of the full potential of this technology in each company is, however, the policy and approach each management pursues and adopts towards its version of Information Technology, as well as the strategic application of the immense potential of this domain of technology.

- Description: Ph.D. (Computer Science and Software Engineering) , Abstract: The concurrent growth of the human population and advancement in technology, together with ever-changing social interaction, has led to the creation of a large, abstract and complex entity known as the Digital Environment. In the current world, the Digital Environment, which is continually growing and ever-evolving, is now almost unrecognisable from what it started off as nearly 50 years ago. The human population has grown rapidly in the past century, growing to nearly 8 billion people in 2019, already double the population from 1975. This has created a world with more people than ever before, all of whom have a need to communicate with others, share information and form communities. Technology also experienced unprecedented advancements in this time, with important inventions such as electricity, computational machines, and communication networks. These technologies grew and allowed for people around the world to communicate as if they were next to each other, facilitated by the advent of the Internet. Presently, people all around the world are creating, sharing, and consuming information, while forming online communities, and also growing the physical footprint of the Internet and all connected devices. The intersection of these events formed the Digital Environment: an amalgamation of the physical, digital and cyber worlds. It is evident how rapidly and completely the Digital Environment has evolved in the past few decades, so what is in store for the future? Can people prepare for what the Digital Environment is to become and possibly even change its course? This thesis proposes a novel model for the simulation and prediction of the evolution of the Digital Environment: the Digital Environment Evolution Modelling and Simulation model or DEEv-MoS. The DEEv-MoS model proposes a method that makes use of well-developed and commonly used fields of research to create a holistic simulation of the Digital Environment and its many parts. Through the use of intelligent agents, entity component systems and machine learning, accurate simulations can be run to determine how the future digital landscape will grow and change. This allows researchers to further understand what the future holds and prepare for any eventualities, whether they are positive or negative...

- Description: D.Phil. , The aim of the study was to explore and understand the emerging leadership challenges in order to further enhance the development of leadership and management in the information technology industry in South Africa. A combined casing and life-story approach in this modernist qualitative research study was employed. Selective sampling, as described by Plummer (1983; 2001) as part of his critical humanistic approach, was employed to select the CEO, Mr X, from a particular South African information technology company. Data were obtained mainly from solicited sources, but also some that were unsolicited. This resulted in a life story containing rich descriptive data obtained at first hand from Mr X’s professional career and associated areas of his life. The life -story of this storyteller was organised manually as well as with the aid of ATLAS-Ti 5.0, a computer-based software package suitable for this type of study. The leadership landscape model of Veldsman (2004), a local expert in the area of leadership, together with key theoretical concepts found in the literature, were used to construct an enhanced leadership model. Appropriate qualitative guidelines were used to ensure a study that attends to both academic rigour and aesthetics. The resultant constructed leadership model offers important, if not unique, insights and findings regarding the leadership environment, individual psychosocial dynamics, competencies and capabilities, as well as leadership roles, modes, styles and processes that contribute to personal leadership effectiveness. The thesis illuminates and offers recommendations for a number of methodological and theoretical implications regarding local and global leadership studies, as well as for practice and policy regarding leadership and managerial development.

- Description: M.Com. (Computer auditing) , 1. Overview of Topic This dissertation deals with the question of the computer auditor's involvement in IT (Information Technology) strategic planning. Increasingly, organizations have come to value IT for the competitive or strategic advantage that it can provide in the modern marketplace. IT has thus moved from being an administrative function to being of strategic importance to an organization. The IT strategic plan expresses an organization's beliefs and goals relating to the use of information technology and the use of IT for strategic purposes. The IT strategic plan should ideally support the organizational goals and the principles identified in the organizational strategic plan. 2. Research Problem and Methodology The purpose of this research project is to identify whether a computer auditor should be involved in IT strategy planning. It is contended that the involvement would normally be that of auditing an IT strategy, but could also extend to providing input into the development of such a strategy. This dissertation suggests that the IT strategy is a risk area in the organization and as such should be examined by the computer auditor. In addition, the concept of IT strategy being a key control system within the organization is introduced. A survey of literature is used to justify the above. Based on points gleaned from the literature survey, a suggested guideline for auditing an IT strategy is proposed. 3. Results of the Research Although a comprehensive survey of literature was performed. no indication was found that this topic had been dealt with in the past. The literature survey. however, proved to be of value in defining IT strategy and identifying it's risk areas. In addition, some of the literature did imply that there was scope for the involvement of the computer auditor in IT strategy planning. The literature survey also indicated that the topic of IT strategy was of importance to South African companies. Based on the literature survey it was concluded that, because IT strategy represented a risk area to the organization, the computer auditor should be involved in the audit thereof. The following guidelines were drawn up: one to assist in identifying when an IT strategy should be audited, one to identify control objectives relating to IT strategy and a corresponding audit guideline for each control objective. 4. Conclusion The literature surveyed indicated that there was a definite need for the computer auditor to become involved in the audit of IT strategy. The guideline presented for the audit of an IT strategy should prove to be useful to the computer auditor in identifying when and how an IT strategy should be audited. Investigating the actual involvement of the computer auditor in IT strategic planning was identified as an area for possible future research.

- Description: At present, the average employee is being bombarded with an ever-increasing number of messages information on his/her company, its products and services, as well as information on its strategy all flooding in from a myriad of sources, including internal vehicles such as e-mail, the intranet, management memoranda, internal publications, as well as the external media, such as the Internet, the local newspaper, television news and national business and industry magazines. The term “information overload” is usually understood to present a state of affairs where an individual’s efficiency in using information in his/her work is hampered by a surplus amount of relevant and potentially useful information available to him/her. The principal aim of this study, therefore, is to establish the extent and impact of information overload on the knowledge worker in the banking industry, with special reference to the part that e-mail technology plays in the creation of such overload. Broadcasting, the telephone and the Internet have revolutionised the way in which workers communicate around the globe. Electronic-messaging systems such as e-mail have become the medium of choice in many organisations, and hold significant and valuable business data, information and knowledge. These systems have had a profound impact on the way in which personal and business communications are effected in the office. With e-mail having acquired mission-critical status, a number of concomitant circumstances and consequences have arisen that present organisations, such as banks, with a variety of challenges, among which • the impact on employees’ productivity, owing to the time spent on e-mailing activities • employees’ attitudes towards e-mail • compliance with corporate policies, such as those policies governing electronic communication and computer use • surveillance and monitoring of e-mail • the quest for finding formal archiving solutions. , Prof. C.W. - Description: M.A.(Information Science) , The first part of the study is a literature review which indicate that small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) represent an important vehicle to address the challenges of job creation, economic growth and equity. Modern economy is driven by innovations and knowledge. Transforming information resources into knowledge and maximise the value of knowledge is the new challenge in achieving a sustainable competitive advantage. Information resources are needed by small businesses as much as their larger counter parts but small businesses are usually in a disadvantaged position in terms of finance and expertise. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) offer small businesses new opportunities in the information economy. Exciting ICT applications such as Web portals provide platforms for business communities to share information and communicate more efficiently than ever. Such information resources enable small businesses to react faster and adapt better to the changing global market. The stimulation of SMMEs must be seen as part of an integrated strategy to develop the society to a higher level. The research findings of this study provide all stakeholders in small business development in South Africa including government, industries and academics a better understanding and practical guideline for delivering information resources to small business owners and managers and the design of information portals that can address the information needs of small businesses in South Africa. The empirical components that follow the literature review comprised a questionnaire survey. The survey focused on non-franchised small businesses in the retail industry in the greater Johannesburg metropolitan. A total of 150 questionnaires completed by small business owners and managers were used for statistic analysis in this research. The questionnaire consisted of four sections: business biographic information, business information and agencies, information and communication technologies usage, and community and portal activities. The survey results revealed valuable insights and trends in the use of ICTs and attitudes towards information sharing amongst small business owners and managers. Textile, clothing, footwear and leather goods were the most popular trade for the small businesses use in the survey. Nearly all respondents prefer English for business communication and the businesses are typically owner manager with a small number of employees. . Infrastructure for ICTs is in place for small businesses, but the usage level is still basic. Short message service (SMS) and e-mail are the most commonly used leT tools. Traditional media such as television, radio, newspapers and magazines remain the most important source of information for these small business owners and managers. Younger businesses adapt better to ICTs than the older businesses. Despite a mixed attitude towards sharing business information, small business owners and managers showed a high level of interest in networking with other businesses, in particular with potential customers and suppliers. Most respondents do not belong to any professional or industrial organisation primarily because they were not aware of these organisations. Based on the literature review and the empirical research, the final conclusion that was made from this research is that Web community information portals can, to a great extent, promote the use of information resources for small businesses in South Africa. The results from this research give a better understanding and are useful guidelines to stakeholders in small business development in South Africa.

- Description: Abstract: Information is paramount to empowering people and communities, laying the foundations for “equality, sustainability and prosperity” as a critical driver of progress (Garrido & Wyber 2017:7). While only half of the world’s population has access to devices, let alone online services, the need to foster the growth of an information-empowered society is more significant than it has ever been (Garrido & Wyber 2017:7). Information Communication Technology (ICT) provides this mechanism, with mobile technologies playing a significant role; however, having access to information and having the ability to connect is meaningless if people cannot apply information to ‘real-world problems’ (Garrido & Wyber 2017:7,46). The following dissertation describes an interaction design (IxD) project that follows a Research Through Design (RTD) methodology. The study aimed to improve information-seeking activities with and for small-scale farmers, namely the farmers of the Siyakhana Initiative, using an experience-centred approach. The research leveraged a unique combination of activity-based models providing the theoretical underpinning of the study. The co-design process used a novel integration of contextmapping and IxD to identify small-scale farmer’s motivations and aspirations related to their information needs and information-seeking behaviours. The outcome of the study was the co-design of a prototyped concept using the affordances offered by digital technology to improve the way that small- scale farmers find, use and share information. , M.A. (Design)

- Description: D. Litt. et Phil. , The main research question addressed by this study is whether the application of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has an effect on the practice of law, and specifically whether information and knowledge management affects the process of legal research. Various issues are considered in this regard, including what the concept of knowledge management (KM) entails in a law firm and what the current KM trends are in South African law firms. To this extent an investigation follows of the global trends in the application of ICTs for legal research purposes and what the specific applications are of KM in support of legal research. Furthermore, this study investigates how information technology applications and KM systems and strategies can support the legal research process and what the benefits of KM are to legal research. This entails a study of the unique characteristics of legal research in a digital information environment and of the challenges legal researchers face in a changing information environment. Subsequently the skills and tools that are required for effective digital legal research are discussed. This research also considers the effect the changing information environment has on the role of the legal information professional, which includes an investigation of the reasons why legal information professionals can and should support lawyers in their legal research activities. Specifically, this study considers the roles, skills and competencies of legal information professionals as knowledge managers, digital librarians and trainers of legal research skills in a changing information environment. Lastly, this study investigates whether current legal research skills training offers useful guidelines to future digital legal researchers.

- Description: Abstract: The globalisation of business and markets is growing rapidly and information and communication technologies (ICT) are developing at a very fast pace. This has resulted in the emergence and formation of virtual project teams, also referred to as global project teams. Virtual project teams have increased global competitiveness as well as investments in several types of projects in manufacturing, telecommunications, information technology, engineering, financial services and construction, and are used as a means of enhancing team performance. From this globalisation of business and markets, virtual project teams are now operating within the boundaries of the operational requirements of the team members. This allows for flexibility of working from anywhere without restrictions imposed by geographical boundaries, differences in time zones and heavily relying on communication technologies. The aim of this study was to develop a conceptual framework to improve the performance of virtual project teams, which information technology (IT) project managers can use to better understand how teams can be managed. The quantitative research methodology was employed in this study to collect data using an online questionnaire and the data was analysed using statistical methods. This research methodology allowed the researcher to explore this phenomenon in greater depth. The purposive sampling method (non-probability) was adopted for this study. The key findings of this research are that the following factors improve the performance of virtual IT project teams in South Africa: communication, good leadership, trust, social interaction, team cooperation and commitment. The research further reveals that there is a strong correlation between these factors; hence the factors identified were all essential for the development of the conceptual framework. , Ph.D. (Informatics)

- Description: D.Phil. , IT plays a vital role in most institutions, and decision-makers have to be concerned about ensuring that capital investment decisions pertaining to IT investments are efficient. This is even more crucial in the prevailing tough economic conditions. The intention of the study was to test the perceptions of IT decision-makers on the efficiency of capital investment decisions pertaining to IT within their various institutions. The management dilemma in this study was described as the inability by decision-makers to tell whether or not the IT investment would deliver the desired results. In order to resolve the management dilemma, a list of management questions was raised, for example: Which factors had an impact on the efficiency of capital investment decisions pertaining to IT? How did decision-makers quantify the financial and non-financial costs attributable to IT investments? How did decision-makers quantify the financial and non-financial benefits attributable to IT investments? The primary objective of the research was to conduct a literature review on the identified research constructs and through scientific empirical research construct evidence in support (or otherwise) of the hypotheses that are put forward. The secondary objectives of the research were: Identifying the factors that impact on the efficiency of capital investment decisions pertaining to IT; Determining the levels of satisfaction by various stakeholders with regard to the value that IT investments add to their institutions; Determining whether or not institutions were able to identify and quantify the financial and non-financial costs attributable to IT investments; Determining whether or not institutions were able to identify and quantify the financial and non-financial benefits attributable to IT investments; iv Determining whether or not IT investments created a competitive edge over other institutions; Determining the applicability of risk management tools on IT investments within various institutions; and Determining the extent to which current financial tools were utilised in evaluating capital investment decisions pertaining to IT.

- Description: M.Com. (Business Management) , Abstract: For many organisations, as business needs change, the need for better decision support systems increases. Which is why many organisations today embark on a journey of transitioning from traditional way of doing business intelligence to self-service business intelligence (SSBI). As is with many a new technology, SSBI presents different challenges to companies, therefore, to effectively deal with these challenges, it is critical to align IT and business strategies. To get real value out of the investment made on SSBI, companies tend to outsource the implementation and management of the solution to known consulting firms to assist them with effective ways of dealing with challenges posed by the solution. Which is why this study embarked on a journey of developing a practical working framework for a consulting firm named C-firm, which can then be used as a strategy to deal with management constraints of SSBI for its clients. A single case study was conducted between C-Firm and its clients to explore management constraints of SSBI, which include data governance and management, supporting infrastructure, context, and systems integration, and to subsequently develop a practical working framework for implementing and managing SSBI solution. The interactive approach model by Maxwell Loomis (2003), informed this case study research design. The flexibility of the interactive approach model best suited this study because it allowed different components of the study to interact with each other. A conceptual framework, which is one of the components of the interactive approach model, helped the researcher to focus on those factors that could assist in gaining understanding of the management issues associated with SSBI and how C-Firm can assist its clients in dealing with those issues. The research choice for this study was mixed method, mixed-model research. This means quantitative and qualitative data were collected, and researcher used quantitative analysis procedures to report on the findings. Data collection instruments used were semi structured interviews and an online questionnaire with open-ended and close-ended questions. The empirical study involved gathering data from both C-Firm’s employees and its clients. The research participants were nineteen (19) BI developers from C-Firm, and from C-Firm’s clients’ nine (9) BI developers and five (5) BI managers. The key findings of the empirical study in terms of data governance and management, supporting infrastructure, context, and systems integration were then used to develop a...

- Description: The image of librarians and the Academic Library’s role in teaching and learning has always been a topic close to the heart of these professionals. Equally important for librarians are positive relationships with management and colleagues within the institution. Interdependencies between faculty and the library impact on the performance and delivery of services and require careful management as well. This paper focuses on how a library manager as a member of the Extended Management Committee of a university interacted with colleagues in senior management on a topic of mutual interest to complete a group assignment. The role played by the library manager and the changes in and impact on the relationships will be highlighted. The topic of the assignment “Optimizing ICT trends to enhance Open Distance Learning (ODL)” provided ample opportunity to demonstrate the changed role of the Academic Library in ODL as well as in online teaching and learning. A brief overview of ODL, information on the assignment and methodology followed will be presented. Information on the findings will be shared and the views of participants in the audience on these findings will be invited. An opportunity to share similar or different experiences will also be provided. The findings indicate that there is a better understanding of the role of the academic library in teaching and learning as well as appreciation for the way the library optimizes ICT developments to improve service delivery and access to services and resources. Another finding is that there is enhanced collaboration with the library as well as increased awareness of possibilities to utilize technologies in ODL. - Description: M.Ing. (Engineering Management) , Abstract: The objective of the research is to formulate a simplified physical asset modelling framework that is universal to any industry or any asset type, for use in the chosen Computerised Physical Asset Management System (CPAMS) such that it provides the benefit of improved management of physical assets over its lifecycle. The research highlights that there are numerous CPAMS, whether branded as ERPS, CMMS, EAMS or CFMS as example, however the track record of providing organisational benefit given the significant initial and ongoing investment, is limited. The literature review highlights that the configuration of the CPAMS is one of the contributors to limited benefit, where configuration refers to the structuring and organisation of the CPAMS to do that which the user require. One aspect of the CPAMS configuration is the physical asset modelling framework within which the physical assets are recorded in the CPAMS along with its myriad of data, information and various settings. In addition to that which is entered by the user, the processing of various performances and reporting against the asset modelling framework is equally critical. The development of the physical asset modelling framework involved two independent approaches, firstly deriving a framework from literature review of reliability and logistics engineering theory, and secondly, a framework derived from the research of existing industry asset and asset hierarchy naming conventions, standards or frameworks. The theory-derived framework was validated by the existing industry frameworks with the difference that majority of the existing industry frameworks has an additional organisation level in the hierarchy. A single physical asset modelling framework was derived from the nine existing industry frameworks and since this also validated the theory-derived framework, the industry-derived framework was concluded as the universal simplified physical asset modelling framework. A CPAMS is a necessity for the optimised management of physical assets over its lifecycle to achieve levels of sustained performance required by the organisation’s long-term business strategy and real-time operations. A CPAMS has the potential to realise this optimised management, however, and this is to be emphasised, this potential is only realisable when the CPAMS is configured and maintained by skilled asset management professionals having detailed understanding of what is required for lifecycle asset management, and therefore how the CPAMS must enable this management. This research has developed one such critical requirement which is a universal simplified physical asset modelling framework.

- Description: Abstract: This research project explores the use of Information Architecture (IA) in Design Thinking for the purposes of ideating solutions to wicked problems. A constructivist account of IA is advanced in this study offering new perspectives, distinct to those offered by the mainstream IA employed in digital design, heralding from Library and Information Science. This reframing of IA creates a new space to explore what value may be found lying dormant in the relationship between IA and DT, and Design in general. The Research Through Design (RTD) methodology serves to support the constructive nature of this inquiry. In RTD, the researcher operates both in the role of designer and researcher, executing and critically reflecting upon a design project. For this study, a design project was conducted to address the complex social problem of addiction as it manifests in Johannesburg, South Africa. A new form of IA, Conceptual IA (CIA), is notionally developed to observe and discuss IA when enacted in Ideation following the DT process-method. The findings and conclusions offered emerge from qualitative analysis of observations and reflection upon the design project’s enactment. Within its scope, the study reveals that IA, as reframed, can be understood as operating tacitly within design (and the world) as that which contains and transmits socio-ontological meaning, decoded, recoded and encoded in design. Explicit use of IA methods, tools and techniques greatly enhanced synthetic cognition across the whole of the DT process-method enacted. Furthermore, CIA conducted in Ideation provided the concept for a social systems solution central to a strategy design which synthetically resolved the challenges presented by the wicked problem of addiction. IA and design developed to realise the concept, as blueprints, describe how use of the system in the world triggers a transformation and transcendence of this concept: in use, the IA of the concept being embedded within the structural form of the designed object, comes to be a new socio-ontological phenomena. In this way, a (speculative) theoretical account is given for how an instrumental / ontological mediation of social reality may occur, at scale, by IA employed in Design. , M.A. (Design)

- Description: D.Ed. , Teaching and learning in the Technology Education and the Information Technology learning area traditionally focused on the acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes and reproductive thinking - with minor reference to the facilitation of complex thinking. An appropriate instructional methodology in the Higher Education and Training band is of utmost importance due to the fact that current instructional approaches and strategies in the Information Technology area of learning are not suitable for the facilitation of complex thinking. There are no instructional models for the facilitation of complex thinking through web page design available in South Africa. The cross-curricular nature of Technology Education and Information Systems permits the integration of the stages of the technological process and methodologies of information system design with particular reference to web page design. The problem-based nature of information system design correlates with the aim and functionality of the stages of the technological process. Within the stages of the technological process the balance between constructivist and behaviourist instructional approaches and strategies can provide for meaningful learning. The aim of this study is to design and implement an instructional web design programme (IWDP), and furthermore on the basis of an evaluation of the programme, to develop a prospective instructional model that could promote complex thinking in the project-based classroom. The development of the instructional programme was based on the three pillars of the technological framework (mind tools within web page design, complex thinking, instructional models and strategies), which provided a conceptual framework in the form of criteria on the manner in which complex thinking of learners can be facilitated. This study was developed within the qualitative research paradigm. The use of the case study design and action research was considered the most appropriate for the nature of this study. A group of 17 learners at an institution of higher education and training band was observed during the implementation of the instructional programme. Data was gathered using interviews, classroom observations, journals and essays, in order to explore learners' and the teacher's experiences in respect of the instructional programme. A qualitative data analysis approach was employed to provide meaningful categories and subcategories. From the data it was evident that the learners and teacher had positive experiences with regard to the instructional programme. The programme provided an array of instructional approaches and strategies, as well as the opportunity for learners to experience a multi-method learning environment utilising the technological resources and a network of human resources inside and outside the project-based classroom. It became clear that different instructional approaches and strategies (constructivist and behaviourist) contributed to a variety of learning modes particularly emphasizing discussions, cognitive apprenticeship and peer tutoring in collaborative teams, indicating the facilitation of complex thinking in general. Based on the findings an instructional model was designed and developed that could be applied in the Information Technology learning area, as well as in Technology Education in general.
