- Description: Abstract: Divorce is common in South Africa among all racial groups. However, there is limited information about adults’ lived experiences of their parents’ divorce during adolescence. The researcher realised that adolescents’ needs are seldom attended to during divorce; instead, attention is primarily focused on the divorcing parents. The purpose of the study was to understand adults’ lived experiences of their parents’ divorce during adolescence in Sabie, Mpumalanga Province. This understanding led to the establishment of specific recommendations for the facilitation of adolescents’ mental health after their parents’ divorce. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design was used. During data collection, in-depth, phenomenological individual interviews and field notes were used. The central question asked was: “How was the divorce of your parents for you?” Nine participants from divorced families, whose parents divorced while they were adolescents, were interviewed in Sabie, Mpumalanga Province. Data were analysed using Tesch’s method, and an independent coder was involved in the process. All appropriate measures were adhered to in ensuring that trustworthiness and ethical principles were applied throughout the study. The study’s findings revealed that participants experienced negative consequences of their parents’ divorce, such as educational challenges, delinquent behaviour, poverty, difficulty in forming future relationships, unstable home environments, and taking a parental role at an early age. They also experienced negative emotional responses from the divorce of their parents, such as sadness and jealousy. They were caught in a situation where they felt they were intermediaries between their parents, and witnessed domestic violence. These experiences were traumatic, and participants did not wish divorce to affect other adolescents; they wanted to protect other adolescents from experiencing the divorce of their parents. Specific recommendations were described to facilitate the mental health of adolescents after the divorce of their parents. The specific recommendations included the facilitation of physical, social and emotional support after adolescents’ parents’ divorce. Through this recommendation, the researcher believed that the adolescents’ wellbeing and coping skills would be enhanced. Nurses play a significant role in the health system and are involved in human survival; thus, recommendations for nursing practice were included to promote the mental health of adolescents experiencing the divorce of their parents. Key words: Experiences, adolescents, parents and divorced. , M.Cur. (Psychiatric Mental Health)

- Description: M.A. (Psychology) , Divorce rates have escalated dramatically since the early sixties and indications are that it will continue to do so. Although divorce has become a common experience, it remains one of the most stressful life events and a potential source of significant adjustment problems. A review of literature indicates that a relationship between divorce and psychopathology is widely accepted. The most critical question about divorce has not been answered fully, namely: what are the factors that facilitate a good outcome? More often researchers focused on the factors contributing to continued problems and pathology. The purpose of this study is to determine what relationships exist between degree of mental health in divorced people and two factors suggested by literature. These two factors are assertiveness and internal locus of control. Ideally, a holistic view of a person in his/her unique life situation should be taken. In order to limit the scope of this study only the two personal factors were studied, keeping in mind that there is an ecological interaction between many known and unknown factors and granting that it is artificial to isolate only two factors from the encompassing whole. It was postulated that a more internal locus of control orientation would facilitate an individuals adaptation after divorce. Furthermore, it was postulated that assertiveness would greatly enhance the individuals ability to adapt and adjust to the divorce. A person with these qualities would be able to realistically assess the demands of the divorce situation and address the demands in a confident and proactive way. The integrated model of mental health states that a mentally healthy individual would have the following attributes: a positive identity, flexibility, emotional sensitivity, the ability to form intimate interpersonal relationships and altruism. These attributes were used in this study as an indication of the degree of mental health in divorced people...

- Description: M.A. (Clinical psychology) , A plethora of psychological research on the topic of divorce exists. The impact of parental divorce on the children, however, is much disputed in this literature. The present study‟s aim was to attempt to clarify this dilemma by describing the unique experiences of four adolescent males whose parents divorced when they were at a very young age. A qualitative research design was followed. Data was collected in the form of face-to-face interviews or „conversations‟ with the four respondents. Verbatim transcriptions of these conversations were then explored systematically from the hermeneutic tradition in order to understand the distinctive experiences of these four boys, from the time of their parents‟ divorce to the present. The findings from this exploration are in the form of various themes that were extrapolated from the transcriptions and clarified with reference to the existing findings in the literature. In addition, consistent with the hermeneutic tradition, co-construction of meaning was enhanced by the symbolic use of selected paintings. In summary, this study offers a description of four adolescent males‟ personal experiences of their parents‟ divorce, with the supplementary use of imagery and art in order to further enrich their subjective and often poignant narratives.

- Description: D.Litt. et Phil. (Psychology) , Divorce is an international problem that implicates children, affecting their best interests. In the United States of America, education programmes for divorcing and separating parents have been offered for decades. In South Africa the law has made provision for such education programmes. This study concerns the efficacy in a South African context of an already existing education programme for divorcing and separating parents, called Children in the Middle (CIM). This programme is widely used in the United States, has been widely researched, and is based on foundational theory. There are many factors that determine the outcome of divorce for children. There is a need to assist families in order to ensure the most favourable outcome. It is considered to be of the utmost importance to impart information to parents and build their awareness and skills. This research concluded that despite the lack of statistical evidence, the programme had many benefits for the participants, based on the feedback received from them. Parents had become sensitised to their children’s needs. Based on the qualitative data and attendance, it was concluded that psychoeducation at the time of divorce is a much-needed resource for parents in South Africa. Psycho-education for divorcing parents does not replace litigation, mediation or therapy; it should be offered as a mandatory alternative or an addition to the family at the time of divorce and should lead the process. The research has therefore proposed that psycho-education programmes should be mandatory for all divorcing parents regardless of the process that their divorce follows, as although there is no guarantee of outcome, it adds an extra dimension that may lead to a more favourable outcome and that parents are more likely to act in the best interests of their children.

- Description: M.A. , The literature research focuses on the psycho-emotional impact of divorce, with reference to the primary school development life stage of the child. Of all age groups, Lakebrink (1989:327) found that the primary school child feels the most intense sense of sadness during the divorce process, due to the use of denial and fantasy, suffering without a means to relieve it, inability to sublimate feelings and an appearance of immobilisation. Children in this age group are particularly vulnerable to continuous parental conflict, have an intense need to maintain a constructive relationship with both parents and become pawns of co-parental struggle, and are vulnerable to loyalty ambivalence. The rationale for conducting the study and the aims to be achieved, are elaborated in the first section of this chapter. The remainder of the chapter is devoted to the introductory information to the study, namely, problem formulation, aims and objectives, research methodology, conceptualisation and summary of this chapter of the study. An overview of the structure and presentation of the study is also included.
