- Description: Abstract: Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a concept that has been defined as a technology that digitally constructs an accurate virtual model of a building. BIM can be defined as an IT enabled approach that involves the application and maintenance of a fundamental digital representation of a building and all its information throughout the different stages of the project. This study assesses the ways to overcome the barriers hindering the adoption and implementation of BIM in the South African construction industry. The data used in this paper were derived from primary and secondary sources. The primary data tool (questionnaires), was designed based on the related literature that were reviewed. The questionnaire was distributed to construction professionals in the South Africa construction industry, facility managers, and academics who have are scholars on BIM in the South African construction industry. The questionnaires were analysed using descriptive statistical procedures. The findings revealed that a lack of skills, education, and knowledge of BIM are the biggest barriers to the adaptation and implementation of BIM in South Africa. Furthermore, the results also show that educational and skill development initiatives are widely considered to being the answer to the existing barriers to BIM adoption. Lastly, the study makes some recommendation on feasible ways of moving away from the common practice of construction process and to the adoption of BIM on construction projects in South Africa.

- Description: Abstract: Over the past many years, the construction industry has demonstrated reluctance to embrace change towards its conventional ways of doing business. With an economic force generated by a technology moving as rapidly as that of the computer, change is inevitable. Hence, there is a need to identify measures that need to be considered for the effective implementation of Building information modelling (BIM) and Enterprise resource planning (ERP), two construction software's that are meant to help with timely delivery of construction projects. Therefore, this paper investigates the critical success factors that should be considered for the successful implementation of an integrated BIM and ERP systems in the South African construction industry. The investigation was done by identifying from literature factors which are considered critical for the successful implementation of these software's. Thereafter, the identified factors were further confirmed through a quantitative survey conducted amongst professionals working in private sector construction firms engaged in projects ranging from building to civil engineering projects in the South African construction industry. Selected findings reveal that the factors regarded as critical for the successful implementation of a BIM and ERP hybrid include a competent implementation team, sufficient support from top management, infrastructure availability, and competent staff training and human resource among others. Although the findings are based on the perceptions of construction professionals in the South African construction -particularly the Gauteng Province, but the findings supports the knowledge regarding the successful implementation of an integrated BIM and ERP system in the South African construction industry.

- Description: Abstract: Collusion is an unscrupulous and anticompetitive practices among construction stakeholders which has adverse effect not only on the integrity of the parties or people but also on the overall performance of construction projects. In view of this and in order to ensure healthy competition and alliance among construction stakeholders, this study assessed various measures that can be adopted to minimize or eliminate the practice of collusion in the construction industry. The measures were extracted from existing literature materials and questionnaire was adopted as a means of data collection using a 5-point Likert scale. Using convenience sampling, 49 questionnaires were distributed, 43 were retrieved while 41 were found worthy of further analysis. Among other measures, people involved in construction process including the professionals should be encouraged to report any suspicious acts and transactions including collusion practices, and procurement procedures for construction projects should be open and transparent. There is a need to blacklist and deregister professionals and companies that are caught in the act of collusion as this will enhance project performance and subsequently improve the image of the construction industry. Punishments for the offence should be well documented and there should be strict enforcement of the discipline and regulations when a company or individual is found culpable. This study will help regulatory bodies shouldered with the responsibilities of regulating construction activities - including that of the stakeholders - in their quest to reduce or eliminate the practice of collusion in the construction industry.

- Description: Abstract: Collusion is an unethical and disreputable agreement among parties of similar interests with the intention of achieving a goal through immoral and dishonest means. Proper ethical procurement practice in the construction industry, will enable the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) to achieve their mandate which is to promote uniformity in the construction procurement; efficient and effective infrastructure delivery; and development of the emerging contractors, including transformation. Furthermore, the Competition Commission of South Africa (CCSA) to also achieve their mandate which is fair competition in all industries. With collusion in existence it will be difficult for the CIDB and CCSA to achieve their mandate. This study examined the influences of this practice among competitors and stakeholders in the construction industry. Various causal factors of collusion among parties were extracted from review of existing and relevant literature materials and they were further evaluated to arrive at the specific ones that are relevant to the construction industry and selected area of study. Using these factors, close-ended questionnaires were prepared and administered to construction stakeholders with adequate level of experience in the construction industry. The number of questionnaire distributed is 50 and 45 were returned out of which 5 were not correctly and completely filled. The distribution method used was self-administration. In addition, purposive sampling was used. The findings from the 40 respondents indicates that the major cause of collusion in the construction industry is greed of various stakeholders that are shouldered with the responsibilities of managing and monitoring construction contracts and activities especially the contractors. - Description: Abstract: Construction schedule overruns are not uncommon on construction projects world over and the South African construction industry has not escaped the challenges of failing to deliver projects on time. In order to find mitigation measures of schedule overruns, the first step is to identify the causes of these overruns. This paper assesses the effects of construction projects schedule overruns in the Gauteng – South African construction industry. The data used in this paper were derived from both primary and secondary sources. The secondary data was collected via a detailed review of related literature. The primary data was collected through a well-structured questionnaire which was distributed to construction professionals, who include: Architects, quantity surveyors, civil engineers, construction mangers and project managers. Out of the 200 questionnaires sent out, 146 were received back representing a 73% response rate. Data received from the questionnaires was analysed using descriptive statistics procedures. Findings from the study revealed that extension of time, cost overruns, loss of profit, disputes, poor quality of work due to hurrying the project, creates stress to the client, acceleration losses, bad reputation with contraction team, claims and delay in getting profit by the client were the major effects of construction projects schedule overruns in Gauteng, South Africa. - Description: Abstract: The construction industry is different from other industries due to its unique characteristics. Moreover, construction projects involve different individuals and organizations which are all gathered to achieve a specific task at a specific time. However, South African construction projects sometimes face challenges relating to quality and cost overruns. This challenges can also be attributed to ineffective leadership in the South African construction industry. Therefore, it is important to evaluate leadership in the South African construction industry. Effective leadership can improve construction productivity, where its outcomes include effectiveness, satisfaction, and project success. The main objective of the study is to identify leading characteristics of construction and project managers in the South African construction industry which influence the success of construction projects. The data used in this research were derived from both primary and secondary sources. The secondary data was collected via a detailed review of related literature. The primary data was collected through a well structured questionnaire aimed at 150 projects and construction managers in the South African construction industry, 110 questionnaires were received (73% response rate). Data was analysis using statkon SPSS software, whereby frequecises and descriptive was attained. Findings from the study indicate that the main leading characteristics which influence the success of construction projects include monitoring for results, problem solving and informed judgment, team building, initiative, influencing, communication, visioning, planning and goal setting, time management, sense of responsibility, empowerment, discipline, ethics, positive expectations, conceptualization, and conflict resolution. Based on the outcomes of this study it is clear that leadership characteristics of a project and construction manager are important, to establish success from a construction project.

- Description: Abstract: The objective of this study is to explore the causes of small businesses failure within the Johannesburg construction industry, a metropolitan municipality in the Gauteng province of South Africa. The data for the study was collected through a structured questionnaire survey distributed to a sample of 30 owners of small and medium construction companies in Gauteng. The research respondents were construction professionals who work in SMEs. The survey results shown that the major causes of small business failure can be divided into two aspects- which are external and internal. The internal factor revealed from the study include- lack of financial managerial ability and general administration of the business. The study findings revealed the urgent areas that small construction businesses need to be supported in order for them to be sustainable which in order guarantee job security for construction professionals who are employed in these companies; thus contributing to the macroeconomic indicators of the economy.

- Description: Abstract: Organisations are established to address a particular issue of the society and their success or failure in achieving their set goals and objectives largely depend on both external and internal factors. Inthis study, sources of failure of small and medium businesses in the construction industry were examined and remedies that can be implemented to reduce the failures were evaluated. Data for the study were collected through administration of structured questionnaire on owners of small and medium construction companies. Itwas revealed that the major causes of small business failure are lack of financial managerial ability and general administration of the business. Challenges faced by these firms include inadequate managerial skills and planning, lack of access to work opportunities, prolonged economic recession, lack of financial skills, competition, incompetent employees and lack of basic business, technical and pricing skills. Small construction businesses need to be supported by government and other stakeholders in order for them to be sustainable and this will also guarantee job security for construction professionals and other form of workforce employed in the companies. The managers and directors of these firms should attend and participate in conferences, workshops, seminars and other forms of leadership meetings within and outside the country to improve their leadership, business and organisation skills.

- Description: Abstract: Lack of stringent measures in safety and construction laws has been attributed to poor performance in Health and Safety (H&S) in the construction industry. The review of literature in the existing body of knowledge becomes paramount in order to continue with the research on the subject matter. The review will enable the road map for the development of the conceptualised integrated H&S compliance model for the Ghanaian construction industry. The conceptualised model theory form the bases of the discussion in this paper. A total number of fifteen studies relevant to accident causation theories were selected out of the total number of thirty studies reviewed, through a rigorous process. The assessment of H&S compliance model for the study was carried out through the combination of objective and subjective attributes. The Domino Theory form the basis for theoretical and conceptual framework of this paper. The study adopted various constructs from Accident Root Causes Tracing Model (ARCTM) and Domino theory. The hypothesised integrated holistic H&S compliance model is presented in this paper based on an in-depth review of the previous models. Government support and contractor’s organisational culture serve as variable constructs identified as gaps in H&S compliance research. Discussions also included the integrated holistic model and the variables of the model, identification of the model and justification for the selected variables. The paper presented the hypothesised integrated holistic H&S compliance model. The gaps identified in H&S compliance research served as the variable constructs. They are government support and contractor’s organisational culture.

- Description: Abstract: Sustainable construction practices not only benefits government, environment and occupants but it secure the earth for future generations to come. Thus the paper discussing sustainable construction practices challenges in the construction industry of South Africa. Structured questionnaires were distributed to different construction companies and construction professionals. From the 75 questionnaires distributed, 60 were brought back and they were all valid and usable. Findings from the survey results obtained from the chosen respondents revealed that the is a lack of training in an organization regarding sustainable construction, lack of awareness of sustainable construction practices, lack of sustainable environmental materials, changes in material prices and escalations, lack of accessible guidance, lack of technical skills, resistance to change in adoption and material scarcity. The construction industry needs to promote and create more workshops on sustainable construction practices so that more stake holders would be aware of it benefits and incentives should be provided to organization that are implementing sustainable construction. Furthermore, the implementation of construction principles can be achieved successfully if all the construction stakeholders participates from design to completion of the project with the assistance of knowledgeable project manager on sustainable construction practices. The study will contribute to the body of knowledge by increasing more awareness of SC to professionals in order to be implemented.
