- Description: Abstract: The present researcher developed a management value chain as part of a Master’s degree during 2009 and 2010. During this study, management practices were identified, deemed necessary for the new world of work. Subsequently, the link between all the management practices and work engagement stood out as a potential challenge, due to the increasing level of complexity in organisations. After the completion of the Master’s study, the present researcher decided to continue immediately with a doctoral study on work engagement within the context of perceived complexity in organisations. The researcher was of the opinion that engagement as a management tool has been over-simplified by consulting organisations, and that the levels of complexity in organisations make it more difficult for management and leadership teams to engage their people effectively. In addition, as a result of doing a comprehensive engagement survey in Africa for a large telecom provider, the researcher realised that senior executives and managers have some effect on their own staff’s engagement levels. He became interested in determining whether a management level engagement construct and a team-level engagement construct existed... , D.Phil. (Human Resources Management)

- Description: M.Com. , The labour market in South Africa is currently experiencing a serious shortage of high-level manpower, specifically trained people in management. Management is at present manned mainly by white males, but projections show that this group will not be able to meet future needs. Women are an important alternative source of manpower, having the potential to be trained in order to alleviate the shortage of managerial talent. Considering the urgency of the problem it is necessary to investigate the possible obstacles which effectively prevent women from reaching positions of high status and responsibility...

- Description: M.A. (Industrial Psychology) , The object of this study is to determine the correlation between selfconcepts selfactualization and anxiety on the one hand and -achievement motivation, as applicable to persons in middle management positions in the mining industry. Four different psychological questionnaires were used that is the Achievement motivation questionnaire of Malan (1978) as adjusted by Pottas and Lessing (1979L the Selfconcept questionnaire of Vrey (1974)s the IPAT Anxiety scale and the Selfrealization questionnaire of Osrin {1972}. The four questionnaires were administered to 110 middle-managers in the mining industry. It was found that the sUbjects obtained relatively high scores on the self-images selfrealization s achievement motivation and the three components of achievement motivations namely selfdetermination, the urge to complete uncompleted tasks and goal directedness. The scores obtained on the anxiety scale were relatively low. It was further found that-there existed a negative linear correlation between anxiety and achievement motivation,- in contrast with the initial hipothesis, namely that a curvilinear correlation exists between the two variables. Selfconcept and selfrealization both yielded a positive linear correlation with achievement motivation and its three components; which confirms the hypothesis. It was found that anxiety formed a negative correlation with all the variables. A positive linear correlation was obtained between selfrealization and selfconcept.

- Description: A survey of the literature indicates that the traditional selection methods, i.e. psychometric predictors, have up to date not been very successful in the identification of future leaders. The Assessment Centre is a technique that has in recent years been applied worldwide as an alternative method. Although scientifically justifiable, it is very costly and time consuming. In order to find a method of pre-selection to the assessment centre it is hypothesised that there is a significant positive correlation between achievement motivation and an individual's achievement at an assessment centre. A significant correlation (p < ,01) is reported between achievement motivation and tenacity as well as planning and organising. Results further indicate a significant correlation between the sum of the dimensions evaluated and achievement motivation.

- Description: The relationship between time orientation and achievement motivation. The aim of the study was to establish a method whereby achievement motivation and time orientation could be empirically linked within the framework of the 4- dimensional classification theory of human behaviour. These constructs were selected because of the assumed relationship which exists between them. The R-A Time Orientation Questionnaire of Augustyn and the Achievement Motivation Questionnaire of Pottas, Erwee, Boshoff and Lessing were administered to 350 experimental subjects to determine whether differences exist in the achievement motivation of individuals classified in different time orientations. The results confirmed that significant statistical differences in achievement motivation exist among individuals classified in the different time orientations.

- Description: D.Ed. , The child constitutes his world by experiencing the content of life in a particular society. This content is included in the school curriculum as learning content after careful selection on the basis of its intrinsic value for education. Owing to the fact that the child attains adulthood by internalizing content, it is of the utmost importance that the pupil be motivated in such a manner by the content of the teaching-learning situation, that he learns because he wants to learn. When the selected content is presented to the child as a factual statement and not as a problem which concerns him, it may be experienced as an answer to a question which was never put. \~hen the child does not experience the content which is presented to him as a real life problem with which he can identify, the result is often meaningless learning by rote in order to avoid punishment, to pass a test, or to win the favour of a teacher. The interdependent nature of teaching and learning has made it possible for the researcher to show empirically how teacher strategies, focusing on the learning content as an object of wonder, relate to a willingness on the part of the pupil to learn in a meaningful way. It was also shown that the absence of teacher behaviour, concentrating on the learning content as an object of wonder, is associated with the absence of an inquiring attitude in pupils. In categories 2, 4 and 6 below, the contingency of the learning content is accentuated, whereas...

- Description: M.Ed. (Educational Psychology) , A great amount of research has been done concerning the influence of debilitating anxiety in relation to performance and achievement motivation of students and pupils. Whilst attention has been focused on the negative aspects of anxiety and fear of failure, indications are found in the research literature that a certain level of anxiety may facilitate the performance and achievement motivation of pupils and students in evaluative and achievement situations. This study forms part of the project "Learning Motivation", which is an interdisciplinary project undertaken by the departments of Education and Psychology. In this research an attempt has been made to analyse the construct of positive fear of failure and to place it within a nomological frame of reference insofar as it pertains to the performance and achievement motivation of pupils in the secondary school phase. Correlational studies were undertaken to determine the relationship between positive fear of failure (facilitating anxiety), achievement motivation, performance and negative fear of failure (debilitating anxiety).
