- Description: The principal objective of this study was to determine the personality and cognitive correlates of career maturity. The sample comprised 1476 first-year students from different faculties at a South-African university. The Career Development Questionnaire was used to determine the career maturity levels of the respondents. Based on the scores in respect of the Career Development Questionnaire the respondents were divided into a career mature, a career immature and a middle group. These groups were then compared in respect of various personality and cognitive constructs. Statistically significant differences were found in respect of most of the personality constructs but not in terms of the cognitive constructs. The implications of the findings are discussed.

- Description: The principal objective of the study was the construction and evaluation of a work performance questionnaire for use with administrative and operational staff. Work performance is a multidimensional construct that indicates how well a worker performs in his/her work, the degree of initiative he/she takes, the ingenuity he/she shows in the finding of solutions for problems, and the manner in which he/she uses the human resources at his/her disposal. Two questionnaires were constructed – one for staff performing managerial functions (the full scale) and one for staff in non-managerial positions (the shortened scale). The sample consisted of 278 staff at a South African university. The full scale yielded a reliability of 0,983 and the shortened scale a reliability of 0,978. The implications of the findings are discussed.

- Subjects: Concentration ability , Arousal , Distractibility , Autonomy , Internal control , External control
- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6369 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1112
- Description: The principal objective of the study was the construction and evaluation of an attention questionnaire. A corollary of the study was to determine the common factors between the Attention Questionnaire (AQ) and the Locus of Control Inventory (LCI). The AQ and the LCI (1999) were applied jointly to a sample of 1577 first-year university students. To start with the AQ was subjected to a principal factor analysis. It yielded three factors which were identified as Concentration Ability, Arousal and Distractibility. Three scales were formed which yielded reliabilities of 0,886, 0,757 and 0,863 respectively. Multiple battery factor analysis was used to establish the common factor structure of the two instruments. Autonomy and Internal Control were strongly related to Concentration Ability.

- Description: The principal objective of the study was to determine the cognitive, educational and personality correlates of the revised edition (1995) of the Locus of Control Inventory (LCI). The three-factor-structure of the LCI was confirmed by Schepers (2004a, pp. 36-41). The obtained factors were interpreted as External Control, Internal Control and Autonomy. The resulting scales yielded reliabilities of 0,841, 0,832 and 0,866 respectively. As far as validity is concerned statistically significant relationships were found with the matric mark, and with several measures of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, the Personal, Home, Social and Formal Relations Questionnaire, the Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes, and the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory. The implications of the findings are discussed.

- Subjects: Flow , Locus of control , Attribution theory , Autonomy , Internet control
- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6400 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1168
- Description: The principal objective of the study was to examine the relationship between locus of control and optimal experience (flow) in carrying out work and/or study activities. Two questionnaires measuring the aforementioned constructs were administered to a group of first and second-year Human Resource Management students (n=168) between the ages of 16 and 30. The results suggest that more frequent experience of flow is positively correlated with Autonomy and Internal Locus of Control. Limitations, lines of future research, implications and further contributions are discussed.

- Description: All information from the outside reaches us via our senses. The incoming information must be processed as quickly and effectively as possible, and suitable decisions must be made, based on this information. To perform this function properly, we humans depend on our senses and higher intellectual abilities. Depending on the nature of the informatio, affective components may also be present. The figures form a frightening picture of South Africa and the question can rightly be asked: What ca be done to improve this situation? One of the areas in which we can all contribute is road safety.

- Description: The principal objective of the study was to examine the factor structure and metrical properties of the third edition (1999) of the Locus of Control Inventory (LCI). A corollary of the study was to examine the convergent validity of the instrument. After a thorough revision and extension of the scale to 88 items it was applied to a sample of 2091 first-year university students. Particular attention was paid to the shortcomings revealed in a study by de Bruin (2004). An iterative principal factor analysis of the scale was done. The three-factor-structure previously found was substantiated by the analysis. The obtained factors were interpreted as Autonomy, External Control and Internal Control. Highly acceptable reliabilities were obtained. As far as validity is concerned it was found that Internal Control and Autonomy are strongly related to Psychological Wellness and External Control negatively to Stress Management. The implications of the findings are discussed.

- Description: The principal objective of the study was to determine the relationship between the fourth edition (2003) of the Locus of Control Inventory (LCI) and version 5 of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF). After some minor changes the LCI was applied jointly with the 16PF to a sample of 3089 first-year university students. Complete records were obtained in respect of 3033 participants for the LCI, and 2798 for both the 16PF and the LCI. An iterative principal factor analysis of the LCI was done. The three-factor-structure previously found was substantiated by the analysis. Highly acceptable reliabilities were obtained. The 16PF yielded six global factors with reliabilities that ranged from 0,721 to 0,861. Canonical correlations of 0,659; 0,455 and 0,322 were obtained between the three scales of the LCI and the primary factors of the 16PF.

- Date: 2006
- Subjects: Canonical correlation , Target rotation , Tarrot rotation
- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6365 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1109
- Description: The principal objective of the study was to determine the utility of canonical correlation analysis, coupled with target rotation, in coping with the effects of differential skewness of variables representing two batteries of tests. Generally speaking joint factor analyses of two or more batteries of tests result in factors of skewness rather than factors of content. To examine the problem, the General Scholastic Aptitude Test (GSAT) and Senior Ability Tests (SAT) were jointly applied to a sample of 1598 first-year university students, and subjected to both a principal factor analysis (PFA) and a canonical correlation analysis (CCA), coupled with target rotation. Three factors were obtained in both inst ances. The PFA yielded factors of skewness and the CCA factors of content. The target rotation gave a good fit with the theoretically specified values. The implications of the findings are discussed.

- Date: 2005
- Subjects: Normative scale , Locus of control , Social learning theory , Attribution theory
- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6362 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1106
- Description: The primary objective of the study was to construct a normative scale of locus of control for use with students and adults. A corollary of the study was to establish the personality, interest and cognitive correlates of locus of control. Conceptually the instrument is based on attribution theory and on social learning theory. The first edition of the Locus of Control Inventory (LCI) was applied to 356 first-year university students during 1994. A factor analysis of the 65 items of the inventory yielded three factors. The factors were interpreted as Autonomy, Internal Control and External Control. Three scales, corresponding to the three factors, were constructed, and yielded reliability coefficients of 0,80; 0,77 and 0,81 respectively. Following this the cognitive, interest and personality correlates of the LCI were determined. The implications of the findings are discussed.

- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6357 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1100
- Description: An investigation into the personality traits of call centre consultants. Despite the fact that nearly all service organisations in South Africa use call centres to interact with clients, there is limited research detailing the factors that influence staff turnover. It was therefore decided to investigate the personality traits of call centre consultants who experience work satisfaction. This information could help organisations to maintain an effective approach in managing staff turnover. The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) and Jackson Personality Research Form (PRF-E) were applied to a sample of 103 persons. The results showed that there was not a unique personality profile in respect of work satisfaction. However, a self-assertive personality type was identified that is dissatisfied with the extent of work variety in call centres.

- Date: 2004
- Subjects: Entrepreneurship orientation , Measuring instrument , Psychological flow
- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6358 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1101
- Description: The development and evaluation of an entrepreneurship orientation questionnaire. The principal aim of the study was to construct a measuring instrument based on a contextual theory of entrepreneurship to measure entrepreneurship orientation. A secondary aim of the study was to determine whether a correlation exists between entrepreneurship orientation and psychological flow. An adapted Psychological Flow Questionnaire was used to measure the respondents’ experience of activities in their daily lives. The questionnaires were applied to 276 respondents consisting of a group of students taking courses in entrepreneurship on the one hand and a group of students taking no such courses, on the other hand. Both instruments were subjected to factor analysis and item analysis. From the study a statistically significant difference in terms of entrepreneurship orientation was found to exist between the entrepreneurship students and the non-entrepreneurship students. A statistically significant positive correlation was found to exist between entrepreneurship orientation and psychological flow. The implications of the findings are discussed.

- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6359 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1102
- Description: The construction and evaluation of a computerised concept attainment test. The principal objectives of the study were the computerisation of the Concept Attainment Test of Schepers (1971), and the determination of its reliability and validity. The computerised concept attainment test (CAT) was applied to 185 undergraduates in Informatics and Computer Science. For comparative purposes the original CAT was applied to 205 first-year students in Mathematics. For validation purposes the semester marks and examination marks of Informatics II and III, and of Computer Science II and III, were used. For Informatics II all the scores of the CAT correlated negatively with the second semester marks. None of the correlations with examination marks were statistically significant. No statistically significant correlations were obtained in respect of Informatics III. For Computer Science II “number correct” (Form A) correlated with all the semester and examination marks. No significant correlations were obtained in respect of Computer Science III.

- Description: The principal objective of the study was to develop a procedure for overcoming the effects of differential skewness of test items in scale construction. It was shown that the degree of skewness of test items places an upper limit on the correlations between the items, regardless of the contents of the items. If the items are ordered in terms of skewness the resulting intercorrelation matrix forms a simplex or a pseudo simplex. Factoring such a matrix results in a multiplicity of factors, most of which are artefacts. A procedure for overcoming this problem was demonstrated with items from the Locus of Control Inventory (Schepers, 1995). The analyses were based on a sample of 1662 firstyear university students.

- Description: This article argues that there is a difference in leadership styles between experienced and inexperienced engineers in South Africa. It was found that experienced engineers are more transformational and more transactional than inexperienced engineers. To demonstrate this in the study, the researcher uses the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) of Bass and Avolio (1995) to identify leadership style. The argument is substantiated by the results of a statistical analysis of leadership style administered to 85 experienced and inexperienced engineers in total.

- Description: Work values of academics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the workvalues of the academic staff at a South African tertiary institution. The actual in contrast to the idealised workvalues was tested in order to determine the differences between these two sets. Value differences in respect of demographical variables were investigated. The relative strength of each workvalue was also determined. The workvalues were tested utilising three scales developed by Schepers and Roodt (2000). A sample of convenience drawn from a population of academics (N=350) yielded 125 complete records. The test results indicated that there are differences between the actual and idealised workvalues. Some statistically significant value differences in terms of demographic variables were found. The results also indicated that the workvalue profiles of the different faculties are very similar.
