- Description: The view that corporate and/or organisation identity is a contributing factor to organisational success, is increasingly observed in the media. At the same time research interest in the concept appears to be on the increase. While identity is not a novel concept and has presented in different forms, it remains shrouded in ambiguity and is in need of more precise articulation. The present study revisited the origins of the identity concept and reviewed various perspectives on identity. A specific meaning structure and theoretical framework for the organization identity concept is proposed and it is concluded that contemporary views of identity are increasingly embracing earlier psychological perspectives.

- Description: Management Development Needs in the South African Air Force: a comparative study of the perceptions of four cultural groups. The object of the study was to determine whether the perceptions of managers and supervisors from different cultural groups in the South African Air Force differ concerning their managerial skills, and to determine to what extent the perceptions of the superiors differ from those of their subordinates. A questionnaire of perceived management development needs was used to determine whether specific training needs exist. It was found that there are indeed statistically significant differences between the various cultural groups’ perceptions of their management development needs and that training needs exist within all four cultural groups.

Participation in decision making.
- Authors: Valoyi, M.J. , Lessing, B.C. , Schepers, J.M.
- Date: 2000
- Subjects: Decision making , Employees
- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6343 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1088
- Description: The aim of the present study was to determine the extent to which employees would like to participate in decision making concerning various organisational issues, especially those concerning: the work itself, working conditions, human resources issues, and corporate policy and planning. The sample consisted of 146 participants, including managers, middle managers, and junior officials from a South African development corporation. A questionnaire to measure employees' desire to participate in decision making was specially constructed for this investigation. It has found that employees with higher academic qualifications were more desirous to participate in decision-making at all levels than employees with lower academic qualifications. This was also true for employees in higher job grades than in lower job grades. Men were more desirous to participate in decision making than women. The implications of the findings are discussed.

- Description: The principal aim of this study was to determine whether there is a statistically significant relationship between career maturity, and career expectations and perceptions of job and organisational knowledge of engineering bursars. The sample comprised 168 engineering bursars from a variety of South African universities. A questionnaire was developed to measure bursars’ career expectations and perceptions of job and organisational knowledge. The sample was divided into homogeneous clusters on the basis of two dimensions – career expectations and perceptions of job and organisational knowledge. These clusters were compared in respect of career maturity. Statistically significant differences were found. A secondary aim of the study was to examine the impact of certain demographic variables on career maturity, career expectations and perceptions of job and organisational knowledge. The implications of the findings are discussed.

- Subjects: Life transitions , Learning readiness , Adult learners , Adult learning readiness
- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6508 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/2707
- Description: Life transitions and learning readiness of adult learners. This research focuses on life transitions as a determinant of adult learning readiness. Stress components are present during each transition which forms one theoretical construct for learning readiness. A workable measuring scale was developed from this construct to measure learning as an adaptation mechanism in life processes.

Die meting van intrapersoonlike prosesse as determinant van leergereedheid by volwassenes in die werksituasie.

- Description: The measurement of intra-personal processes as determinant of adult learning readiness in the workplace. Where wellknown writers such as Knowles and Cross have identified learning readiness as an important characteristic in adult learning, they have neglected to define, describe, operationalize or measure the construct adequately. In a comprehensive study the authors have managed however to identify the determinants of adult learning readiness from the theory available, namely: intra-personal processes, life cycle changes and inter-personal processes. In this article, the processes inherent to the adult learner have been analyzed, described and transformed into usable measurement scales. This contributes significantly in bridging the present gap in andragogical literature.

Leerteoretiese basis van die andragogie.
- Authors: Simpson, C.J.A. , Lessing, B.C.
- Date: 1991
- Subjects: Andragogy , Humanistic learning theory , Human resource development
- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6507 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/2706
- Description: Learning theory basis of andragogy. A cursory glance at andragogy creates the impression that humanistic learning theory plays an all encompassing role in the learner centered approach andragogy espouses. A closer look, however, reveals that Knowles (1973), after having made an intensive study of learning theory, created an extensive framework within which human resource development can take place. The fact that Knowles attracted critique from different areas, led to a need to ascertain the role different learning theories, if any, played in the emergence of andragogy. Having looked at the assumptions displayed by the andragogical approach, as well as a comparison of different learning theories and their connection with andragogy, it became clear that andragogy contains elements of various learning theories in an adapted way. These adaptations resulted in an approach to adult education in which learners are given the opportunity to be part of the learning process in such a way that they themselves contribute to the development which takes place.

- Description: A comparative literary study of the collective bargaining systems of four countries (U.S.A., Britain, West Germany and South Africa) is presented in order to facilitate the identification of conflict issues in the South African collective system. 165 Employers and 75 trade unions in the South African manufacturing industry were used as u randomly selected sample. A Likert questionnaire was designed to measure the attitudes of the sample employers and unions regarding conflict issues. The results indicate strong differences of opinion between the participating groups about the efficiency of the present industrial relations and collective bargaining systems in South Africa. An explanation for obtained results is given and recommendations for further research and development work are made.
