- Description: Abstract: In the knowledge economy, knowledge is channelled in new ways which brings about changes to the structure and function of an organisation. Organisations such as academic libraries often introduce innovations in delivery of information services to clients which entail the use of information and communication technology. Current growth in technological applications is enabling academic libraries to change the way they deliver services to clients. Technological applications continuously redefine how academic library collections are used. This article investigates how change in terms of technology is managed in a decentralised academic library in a higher education institution of South Africa. The study was placed within a qualitative research paradigm. A case study design presented the research providing the opportunity to analyse the perception and experience of participants and ensured that real life events were investigated. Semi-structured individual interviews were used to collect data. The most significant finding of this study is the emphasis on the importance of change management in academic libraries and the need for effective communication in order to achieve low resistance to change from academic library staff.

- Description: The paper is directed at how diversity management influences the different generations of academic librarians in terms of their work performance and co-worker relationships. The four generations currently active in the South African work environment, namely Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y, will be discussed and a view on so-called Cuspers will be provided. The characteristics of these generations will be reviewed to gain an understanding of generational perspectives regarding work performance, work-life balance, retirement, rewards, co-worker relationships and recruitment. Considering the aging workforce it is assumed that generationally constituted libraries will increasingly face challenges related to ineffectual succession planning and inefficiency in co-worker collaboration hampered by generational differences. This paper aims to contribute as to whether or not generational awareness could lead to enhanced co-worker relationships and how this knowledge can potentially facilitate library management. It also seeks to shed light on generational barriers, conflicts and contradictions in the contemporary interactive information society. In conclusion the paper seeks to understand and eliminate the causes of alienation and domination in co-worker relationships and be of value to library management to consequently act in terms of gained generational awareness.

- Description: D. Litt. et Phil. , The main research question addressed by this study is whether the application of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has an effect on the practice of law, and specifically whether information and knowledge management affects the process of legal research. Various issues are considered in this regard, including what the concept of knowledge management (KM) entails in a law firm and what the current KM trends are in South African law firms. To this extent an investigation follows of the global trends in the application of ICTs for legal research purposes and what the specific applications are of KM in support of legal research. Furthermore, this study investigates how information technology applications and KM systems and strategies can support the legal research process and what the benefits of KM are to legal research. This entails a study of the unique characteristics of legal research in a digital information environment and of the challenges legal researchers face in a changing information environment. Subsequently the skills and tools that are required for effective digital legal research are discussed. This research also considers the effect the changing information environment has on the role of the legal information professional, which includes an investigation of the reasons why legal information professionals can and should support lawyers in their legal research activities. Specifically, this study considers the roles, skills and competencies of legal information professionals as knowledge managers, digital librarians and trainers of legal research skills in a changing information environment. Lastly, this study investigates whether current legal research skills training offers useful guidelines to future digital legal researchers.

- Description: Throughout the history of Internet and information and communication technology (lCT) new technologies have evolved quickly and especially networked technologies have gained value from the individuals who apply these technologies. This paper reports the research findings of an investigation of the effects organisations may experience if employees are granted unrestricted access to online social networks. Recent studies by Casella and Hanaki (2008) and Murphy and Pauleen (2007) emphasise the management need to adapt to change that results from employees' use of networked technologies. In current workplaces that rely on intellectual capital to be successful in business, employees are a key source of knowledge and mainly responsible for intellectual capital growth. It is therefore argued in this paper that organisations should critically investigate the application of technology such as online social networking (OSN) in order to support employees in the processes required for knowledge creation. The research problem stated by this study aimed to investigate what the effect of social networking is on employee productivity within organisations and specifically within tertiary educational institutions. In addressing the research problem this paper will provide an overview of the literature review findings as well as the relevant empirical research findings with regard to what OSN entails; what the possible consequences are if employees are allowed access to online social networks without restriction; and how online social networks can contribute to the productivity of an organisation.

In this context, ownership refers to sense of duty to participate in becoming skilled citizens that contribute towards the country’s economy. Objective: In this paper, the research objective is aligned to the first phase of an intervention development study. The objective of the study (in progress) is to develop an intervention and measure how changes to the information and knowledge management curriculum design impact on students’ entrepreneurial awareness of commercialisation processes and procedures. Method: This paper presents the findings of a group level analysis that was conducted by examining the current state of first year information and knowledge management students’ perception and curriculum-fit in terms of their perception of self as ideators and knowledge of the commercialisation cycle. The first phase consisted of literature review and qualitative and quantitative data collection by means of a questionnaire. The results form part of the gap analysis phase of intervention research design...
