- Description: UJ Library in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) invites you to a book launch: “Roadmap for Sustainable Biofuels / Bioenergy in Southern Africa: RegulatoryFrameworks for Improved Development Potential?” ABOUT THE BOOK: The book has been a cooperation project between KAS, the Development and Rule of Law Programme (DROP), the Biofuels Research Chair and Water Institute at University of Stellenbosch for the last two years. Many studies have shown the growing need to produce cleaner energy and to stop climate change. Agenda 21, the Kyoto Protocol and other international agreements and determining national policy documents, emphasise the need to search for sustainable energy solutions and replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. Biofuels could increasingly become part of a sustainable solution to a wide range of challenges – environmental sustainability in the face of climate change, energy security, rising geographical instability and increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The book gives an overview of the scientific background of bioenergy and takes a critical look at possible risk factors for the environment and society by biofuel plants. A closer look is taken at the “socio-enviro-economic” impacts of biofuels with a focus on southern Africa. Furthermore the book provides a background on biofuel regulations from a comparative law perspective. The book aims to outline the potential to develop biofuels as one solution for climate change, energy security and socio-economic challenges. Reverse sweep : a story of South African Cricket since apartheid by Ashwin Desai

- Subjects: Andre Odendaal , South African Cricket , Cricket and Conquest
- Type: Book Discussion

- Description: UJ Department of Sociology, UJ SARChi Chair: African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy and the UJ Library in partnership with Jacana Media, invite you to a discussion about Cricket with Ashwin Desai and André Odendaal based on the books: Reverse Sweep: A Story of South African Cricket Since Apartheid Cricket and Conquest: The History of South African Cricket Retold, Volume 1: 1795-1914 by André Odendaal, Krish Reddy, Christopher Merrett and Jonty Winch ABOUT THE BOOKS: Reverse Sweep is an account of cricket in post-apartheid South Africa; from the tumultuous Gatting tour in which, ironically, the seeds of cricket unity were sown, to the Hansie Cronje saga and the change of leadership from Ali Bacher to Gerald Majola, and more recently to Haroon Lorgat. Cricket and Conquest and its companion volumes explain how racism came to be built into the very fabric of cricket’s ‘culture’ and ‘traditions’, and how it was uncannily tied to the broader historical processes that shaped South Africa. The unique experiences of our different cricket communities are described in ways that have not been done before.
