- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6495 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1605
- Description: The aim of the study was to conduct an exploration into the issues around the employee satisfaction strategy and tool being utilised by a large public utility in South Africa. A mixed method approach was applied incorporating focus groups, individual interviews, and a questionnaire. The results indicate that staff are not satisfied with the existing strategy, are reasonably comfortable with the dimensions being measured but clearly want to see a qualitative aspect added. Major areas of concern are: lack of feedback, little or no action plans linked to the results and a lack of a genuine concern for employee satisfaction.

- Identifier: uj:5556 , ISSN 1015‑8758 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/14143
- Description: In his analysis, Kloppenborg (1987) identified a number of logia in the main redaction that were more proverbial than prophetic in nature. This article considers the possibility that these sayings originally formed part of Q¹, but were added to Q² by the main redactor during the redactional process. It also explores the possibility that the main redactor not only inserted and interpolated prophetic material into Q¹, but also transformed original wisdom sayings into prophetic Q² material.

"Do we stay or do we leave?” : the role of trust and engagement in students’ decision whether to remain in South Africa
- Authors: Uys, Tina , Senekal, Anton

- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:5601 , ISSN 09766634 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/14331
- Description: This paper focuses on University of Johannesburg (UJ) students' views on remaining in or leaving South Africa. These views are based on the degree of trust students perceive the government (broadly defined) to be worthy of, and the degree of engagement in the affairs of the country that students are prepared to expend in the context of perceived threats to South African citizens. A survey of 1214 undergraduate students on all four UJ campuses was conducted in 2011. Care was taken that the sample reflected the overall picture of the research population. The data is analysed in terms of a typology that considers the extent to which people either respond to real or perceived threats based on trust or distrust in the government's ability and willingness to protect their interests as citizens. On this basis, they could furthermore either engage the threatening reality or disengage from it altogether. The paper analyses the extent to which patterns can be identified among different groups of UJ undergraduate students with regard to the four possible responses that emerge from the developed typology: Trusting engagement, trusting disengagement, distrusting engagement and distrusting disengagement.

- Description: The primary aim of the study is to describe an initiative to effect organisational change at a previously disadvantaged school in South Africa’s Gauteng Province. Qualitative methods were used to collect and analyse data on the social process of change in the school. Essays of role players in the change process on their experiences led to important insights. This exploratory study points to a process that was effective in bringing about change at a school and holds promise for constructing a theoretical model of how change could be effected in ineffective schools.

- Description: This paper explores the process of self-reflection undertaken by a History lecturer with a view to promoting the same type of critical awareness among a group of third- year History students at a South African university. The study draws on student experiences of and responses to a critical pedagogy that offered a deconstruction of past identities and enabled an emerging discourse of agency with contemporary relevance. By means of a qualitative methodological approach, openended, reflective questionnaires were used amongst a focus group to gauge student perspectives. The paper concludes that via creative and innovative pedagogy, History can become a vehicle for promoting self-awareness and in turn critical citizenship in South Africa’s current social context.

- Description: Organisational transformation has become one of the most used change concepts of our time, but researchers and practitioners seldom pause to consider the meaning of this concept more explicitly. The meaning parameters of organisational transformation are explored from within the prevailing literature and considered in terms of the results of a qualitative study of limited scope conducted among managers of a local government institution. Both the literature and the findings of the study reveal substantial variation in the meaning of transformation, which is considered undesirable for change management practices. The implications of the study are briefly indicated.

- Description: The training and development of employees in the airline industry usually take place within a decentralized structure and may result in fragmented and costly initiatives. To improve the current practice a corporate university (CU) model to be implemented in the airline is proposed. For the purpose of the study qualitative interviews were held, human documents were studied and participant observation and the views of employees of the South African airline industry were sought regarding training in general and CUs in particular. The study revealed support for the CU concept because it would encourage continuous learning at all levels in the organisation and would place emphasis on both employee and organisational needs.

"Type change" : the perceived structure of organizational change events

- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:6230 , ISBN 1-932917-05-5 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/5320
- Description: Sustainable development and global prosperity hinge substantially on healthy, progressive organizations. The liability of change, which manifests in the dismal success rates of large scale organizational change initiatives, however threatens the advancement of this agenda. While the reasons for this are complex, a starting point for reversing this trend is a greater understanding of the phenomenon of organizational change, which is reified and enacted at the level of the individual employee. The current study empirically explored the under researched area of 'types of change', which influences employee perceptions and responses and which ultimately holds the key to organizational adaptation. Several structural dimensions were extracted from the 663 respondents' perceptions of change events, which suggest a more considered but also a potentially more effective approach to dealing with organizational change.

- Description: Abstract: Using Critical Realism, this article looks at articles from selected South African newspapers which reported on the #FeesMustFall protests. The study established that, arising from the protests, was a culture characteried by tensions and distrust amongst stakeholders such as students, university management and the government. This, the article argues, was a result of how each of these stakeholders perceived, and went on to exercise, their agency in an attempt to resolve the conflict arising from the protests. To avert a recurrence of negative consequences of student protests such as the destruction of property and development of toxic and adversarial relationships amongst different stakeholders, the article recommends collaborative approaches to conflict resolution in South African higher education. These approaches need to be framed differently from those in which some stakeholders seek to use their agency to achieve outright victory over other stakeholders – a recurring mode of engagement during the #FeesMustFall protests.

- Description: Abstract : Blessed relationships (BRs) bring together technology, sexuality, and economics within a consumerist environment. Academic literature has used ‘blesser’ and ‘sugar daddy’ interchangeably, and online reports have explained how BRs, as a new South African cultural option of structuring relationships, differ from sugar relationships because they represent a new product on offer in relationship shopping. This essay critically evaluates academic and selected online sources to understand the allure and controversy of BRs. Research focuses predominantly on ‘controversial’ frames of health and moral risks. However, labels, such as ‘blesser’ and ‘sugar daddy’ discursively construct different sexual domains. After reviewing literature and online information, the essay presents a nomenclature of transactional relationships that considers the agential and discursive subtleties of BRs. Implications and research recommendations for the structuring of relationships, given newer options for lifestyle, companionship, and sexuality, which BRs have made publicly visible, conclude the essay.

- Description: Abstract: In the 1980s when research on effective schools surfaced the importance of 'instructional leadership in the United States, skeptics who wondered if this would be just another educational fad. Yet, 40 years later, the expectation for school principals to be 'instructional leaders' has become ubiquitous throughout much of the world. This systematic review of research used science mapping to gain insights into the growth, geographic distribution, key documents and authors, and topics in this literature. The authors used a variety of quantitative bibliometric analyses to examine 1,206 Scopus-indexed journal articles on instructional leadership published between 1940 and 2018. The results affirm that the knowledge base on instructional leadership has not only increased in size, but also geographic scope. Contrary to expectations during the 1980s, instructional leadership has demonstrated remarkable staying power, growing into one of the most powerful metaphors guiding research, policy and practice in school leadership. Despite this finding, both author co-citation and co-word analyses revealed the emergence of 'integrated models of school leadership' in which instructional leadership is enacted in concert with dimensions drawn from complementary leadership approaches. Key themes in the recent literature include studies of leadership effects on teachers and students, contexts for leadership practice, and means of developing instructional leaders.

- Description: A contextual theory of entrepreneurship. Industrial psychologists studying the domain of entrepreneurship tend to focus on the independent variables that predispose entrepreneurial behaviour. The challenge, therefore, was to give expression to the nature of entrepreneurship (as dependant variable) from an industrial psychological perspective. This was done by means of the development of a contextual theory of entrepreneurship. Firstly, the fundamental actions were identified that would give expression to the contextual process of entrepreneurship, after which form was given to its structure. This structure was utilised putting in place a typology of entrepreneurship. The geometric characteristics of the structure were explained. Possibilities for application as well as directions for entrepreneurship development, suggested by the theory were discussed.

- Description: An investigation into the personality traits of call centre consultants. Despite the fact that nearly all service organisations in South Africa use call centres to interact with clients, there is limited research detailing the factors that influence staff turnover. It was therefore decided to investigate the personality traits of call centre consultants who experience work satisfaction. This information could help organisations to maintain an effective approach in managing staff turnover. The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) and Jackson Personality Research Form (PRF-E) were applied to a sample of 103 persons. The results showed that there was not a unique personality profile in respect of work satisfaction. However, a self-assertive personality type was identified that is dissatisfied with the extent of work variety in call centres.

- Description: An investigation into determining the potential of workers in the agricultural sector. Industrial Psychological principles and concepts are not being applied extensively in the agricultural sector. Against this background an attempt was made to scientifically identify potential and predict job performance amongst farm labourers. Using the PAQ method of job analysis, critical attributes were identified and a satisfactorily valid battery of tests was developed. The results of this study underlines the importance of the identification of the potential of farm labourers as a first step in the personnel management process. It also serves as a source of information that could be used by farmers for counselling purposes.

'Trying to make South Africa my home’ : integration into the host society and the well-being of refugee families
- Authors: Smit, Ria
- Date: 2015
- Subjects: Forced migration , Refugees - South Africa
- Type: Article
- Identifier: uj:5596 , ISSN 00472328 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/14309
- Description: During the past two decades South Africa has increasingly become a host society for many forcibly displaced families from across the sub-Saharan region. This article draws on some of the findings of a qualitative study with the aim to investigate the impact of forced migration on the daily lives of refugee women and their families as well as their experiences in trying to integrate into the host society. The research population constitutes refugees from the conflict ridden countries of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zimbabwe who reside in the inner-city areas of Tshwane and Johannesburg. Ager and Strang's (2008) conceptual framework, which uses indicators of integration experiences, proved useful as an analytical lens. In discussing the findings specific reference is made to (a) markers and means of integration, (b) processes of social connection, and (c) facilitators of integration. The data revealed that Zimbabwean respondents and their families were slightly better off than the Congolese and Burundian participants in terms of social connection and means to achieve integration into the South African host society.
