- Description: Abstract: The purpose of this minor dissertation is to assess the maturity level of project management within a banking sector project office. The investigation has been narrowed to the author’s own division of work within the banking organisation in order to help with devising means to assist with the project management office. This project management office was setup in late 2009 and is thus a relatively new addition to the division. This banking sector project office has never been reviewed in terms of its project management maturity. An understanding of the operational aspects of the banking sector project management office is required in order to ascertain the level of project management maturity. A brief description is given, within this document, of the banking sector project office team, as well as the associated roles and responsibilities. An overview is also given with regards to the project sizes, project lifecycles, as well as the required documentation. There are various methods available to determine the project management maturity level, such as: Capability Maturity Model Integration, Portfolio, Programme and Project Management Maturity Model, and Kerzner Project Management Maturity Model. The mentioned project management maturity models will be investigated and discussed. The PRINCE2 method is chosen as the method to determine the project management maturity level of the project management office. This method is broken down into assessable sections, where each section is then dealt with in terms of a questionnaire. The results of the questionnaire are combined and analysed. The statistical data is then utilised to determine the level of project management maturity of the banking sector project office. The outcome of the study concluded that the project management office achieved a level 2 of project management maturity, according to the PRINCE2 methodology. , M.Ing. (Engineering Management)

- Description: Abstract: Revenue is the outcome of the engine of a business that produces the entity’s wealth. The lubricants to keeping the engine running are the marketing, operations and strategy components of the business, while complying with the laws of the countries within which it operates. Key indicators, such as performance, growth, sustainability and the entity’s ability to repay its debts within its agreed payment terms, are fundamental in assessing the health of the business. The underlying element in these indicators is revenue. The revenue received by the entities is invariably derived from contracts with customers. Revenue from contract-based systems is derived from a wide variety of products and services. In some circumstances, revenue may not be systematically recognised over the life of a contract, but instead, the contract revenue should be segmented and taken into account at pre-defined points in time. An industry that fits these circumstances as referred to in the previous paragraph is the mobile telecommunications industry, where revenue is accounted for at pre-determined times over the period of the contract – which is usually when some contractual obligation has been met. The difficult part of revenue recognition for the mobile telecommunications industry is the origin of specific values to the different contract segments. The origin of these values is not always obvious from the actual contracts and often does not follow the way in which the contract operates. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has developed numerous autonomous standards for revenue recognition that apply to different industries. However, these standards are extremely complex and have led to variable treatment of similar types of transactions across enterprises. In addition, newly formed businesses may have problems with the various versions of revenue recognition specified in the accounting standards. This is especially so when they do not fit into “deemed normal” industry-specific recommended classifications. Conversely, International Financial Reporting Standards... , M.Com.

- Description: Abstract: South Africa has many foreign nationals working within its borders as well as many residents working in other countries. Both classes of individuals may find themselves in a position of double taxation where they are tax‐resident in the one state, but working in another, and both states seek to tax the individuals’ income from employment. Relief from double taxation on employment income can be found in the ‘income from employment’/’dependent services’ article of a double tax agreement, typically contained in Article 15(2). However, whether this relief is available depends on the interpretation of the Article and the terms contained therein. The term ‘employer’ is one of the most debated terms that often leads to interpretational differences in the application of Article 15(2). The objective of this research was to analyse the concept of the term ‘employer’ for the purposes of applying Article 15(2)(b) and (c) of the OECD MTC and UN MTC from a South African perspective. A doctrinal research methodology was used in this study. This method involved reviewing literature on the subject, identifying the appropriate guidelines to interpretation in line with the established rules of statutory interpretation, and formulating a view on how to interpret the term ‘employer’ in a South African context... , M.Com.

- Description: Abstract: The International Accounting Standards Board is presently working on Phase II of the Insurance Contract project. The objective of this project is to compile a standard, based on principles, which will address accounting for various insurance contracts issued by companies and improve financial reporting comparability between companies. This research study critically evaluates whether decision-useful information will be provided by South Africa’s large, listed long-term insurers through the use of the IASB’s building block approach proposed in Phase II, the Exposure Draft on Insurance Contracts issued in 2013. A questionnaire developed for this study was used in a comparative analysis of current financial reporting and proposed financial reporting by long-term insurers. The findings of this research study indicate that IFRS 4 Phase II will result in the provision of decision-useful insurance accounting information. A long-term insurer’s financial reporting will be more consistent and comparable, which is aligned with the basic requirements of financial reporting. IFRS 4 Phase II will enhance comparability between various long-term insurers in South Africa. These findings support the conclusion that a move to IFRS 4 Phase II for long-term insurer financial reporting in South Africa will be beneficial to users of financial statements in making economic decisions. , M.Com. - Description: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to detennine the efficacy of the homoeopathic remedy Lacacum acidum 30CH in the treatment of chronic tension-type headache (CTTH). According to Silberstein 1 , tension-type headache (TTH) is the most common form of headache and has a lifetime prevalence of 69% in men and 88% in women. Thirty-one subjects enrolled into the study, twenty-eight with CTTH and three with episodic tension-type headache (ETTH). The study is a one-group pretest-posttest design, i.e. this single group had a pre-experimental evaluation period, a period of test stimulus administration and a post-experimental evaluation. All subjects received Lacticum acidum 30CH during the experimental treatment phase. AU subjects were evaluated by means of visual analogue scales (VAS) and the McGill - Melzack Pain questionnaire (MPQ). Analysis of the data obtained from the trial study revealed statistically significant results. The intensity and frequency of headaches decreased during the treatment period as compared with the observation period. The remedy Lacticum acidum has proved efficacious in the treatment of CTTH. The frequency and intensity mean scores were significantly reduced. The results of this study warrant further investigation regarding potency selection, as the remedy may prove to have more satisfactory results. The remedy Lacticum acidum can now be validated as a remedy for CTTH and needs to be represented more widely in homoeopathic literature. Further investigation regarding the mode of action of this remedy now becomes apparent. , M.Tech. (Homoeopathy)

- Description: Abstract: A graph is called planar if it can be represented on the plane without points of intersection of lines. It is clear from the title that this study is concerned with the characterization of such graphs. In Paragraph 1.2 notation and terminology that are needed throughout, are defined. Specialized notation and terminology are defined when needed. Chapter 2 is concerned with the characterization of planar graphs in terms of forbidden subgraphs. In this regard, specific attention is given to a proof of the Theorem of Kuratowski. In Chapter 3 we prove the characterizations of planar graphs in terms of partially ordered sets of Schnyder and Scheinerman. In Chapter 4 a few characterizations of planar graphs (without proof) are presented. These results of planar graphs are used collectively to state a characterization in Paragraph 4.3. , M.A. (Mathematics)

Etiese gesigspunte in die boek Jona

- Description: Abstract: The Bible contains not onJy the will of God, but also a collection of traditional materials that gradually emerged from the people of ancient Israel and early Christianity and which eventually became their authoritative statements about their God, the nature of their existence and their customs. Morality and ethics are observable in this literature (Knight 1982:56). From this point of departure an attempt has been made in this study to identify the ethical aspects contained in the book of Jonah. In order to do justice to the subject, it was necessary at the outset to define ethics. While taking cognisance of the fact that there is no generally accepted definition of the field of ethics, it seemed appropriate to consider the origin of the term "ethics". The term "ethics" is derived from the Greek word "ethos" and ethics is concerned with the study of the concentrated ethos of a society or period and entails conscious reflection on moral usages and custom (Bosman l983a:98; 1983b:10-12). This essay is therefore concerned with the study of the concretised ethos of the societies (Israel, the heathen sailors and the Ninevites) referred to in the book of Jonah. The purpose of the study is to identify these ethos and to deduce ethical aspects from the book by means of Barton's three types of presuppositions, namely (a) obedience to God's revealed will, (b) conformity to a pattern of natural order, (c) imitation of God (Barton 1978:59, 60). It was important to determine the literary category of this book, and various suggestions concerning its literary form. When the different literary categories were explored, the most appropriate classification of the book of Jonah seemed hypothetically to be the narrative drama. All the criteria for a narrative drama are applicable to the book... , M.A.

- Description: Abstract: The Rietvlei water treatment plant has recently (1988) been upgraded and redesigned to accommodate dissolved air flotation and filtration (DAFF) in the same process unit. The reason for this drastic change was the eutrophication of the raw water which made conventional sedimentation before filtration impossible due to the high algal content of the water. Rietvlei is the first treatment plant in South Africa that makes permanent use of DAFF at full-scale. After operating for a number of years it was possible to identify areas where the operation of this process could possibly be improved. This study was directed at these areas and it was shown that flocculation conditions in the baffled flocculation channel can be satisfactory predicted with the use of the Bratby reactor and the Argaman/Kaufman flocculation model, flocculation can be significantly improved with the aid of a nonionic polyelectrolyte... , M. - Description: Abstract: Accompaniment that enables student nurses to give concrete form to abstract theoretical knowledge in nursing practice, is a contemporary nursing educational matter. The aim of this study i s to describe guidelines for accompaniment regarding the correlation of theory and practice for the four year Diploma programme leading to registration as a nurse (general, psychiatric and community) and midwife which would enable independent nursing practice. The aim is expounded by way of a contextual, investigative and descriptive study wherein the requirements for accompaniment have been identified and described as well as the investigation and description of the realisation of accompaniment within an accompaniment partnership in order to describe guidelines for the correlation of theory and practice during the accompaniment of student nurses. In the formulation of the guidelines for accompaniment "that which should be" and "that which is" are combined by way of inductive logic. The guidelines for accompaniment is based on the philosophical viewpoints of the Nursing theory for the whole person. , M.Cur. (Nursing)

- Description: Abstract: The nurse working in the intensive care unit functions as an independent practitioner under the Nursing Act and arising SANC regulations. The liability of the nurse is dependent on her abilities, authority and skill. Abilities also imply knowledge and dexterity in connection with the patient and his ondition, in this case ventilatory nursing regime. The purpose of this research is to determine the influence of a pre-operative bloodgas ventilatory nursing regime patient. analysis on the post-operative of a coronary artery bypass graft A nil hypothesis was set, namely: The determination of a pre-operative arterial bloodgas analysis will have no influence on the post-operative ventilatory nursing regime of the coronary artery bypass graft patient. Two chosen hospital institutions were used for selecting 99 patients. The post-operative ventilatory nursing regime of one institution was determined according to standard criteria, while the other institution used pre-operative bloodgas analysis. A control list was developed to set standard normal bloodgas values and correct nursing action analysis for ventilatory nursing... , M.Cur.

Determination of power components in nonlinear electrical networks
- Authors: De Beer, Arnold Stephanus
- Date: 1990
- Subjects: Power electronics , Electric networks, Nonlinear
- Language: English
- Type: Masters Thesis
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10210/22306 , uj:16186
- Description: Abstract: This thesis describes a study into the field of electrical power theory and specifically deals with the description and determination of power components in nonlinear electrical networks. A general description of fundamental power theory is given and the basic philosophy of fictitious power compensation ( according to Frryze ) is dealt with. The contributions of Budeanu, Nowomiejski, Enslin and others are described. The description of Czarnecki was found to be a good model for determining energy flow and power components in general power systems. It is shown how the Czarnecki power components can be calculated from practical noise infected data. A computer program was written for this purpose and is given in conjunction with two case studies. Relationships between power theories, power factor correction and general compensation are stated in principle. Certain power calculation errors as well as negative effects that can impair effective energy transfer and compenation are also discussed. , M.Ing. (Electrical and Electronic Engineering)
