- Description: The University, this year, introduced the new Values Charter which will drive the strategic direction of UJ in the years to come. Guiding the principles contained in the charter are the University’s Strategic Thrusts. These thrusts represent a commitment of where UJ wants to position itself within the next decade. One of the University’s goals is build a reputation of a university that is globally recognised for its excellence in teaching and learning, and innovative and ground-breaking research. This is why the fourth strategic thrust of the University is to achieve “an international profi le of employees, students, scholarly output and institutional reputation”. This thrust goes hand-in-hand with the aim to entrench the core vision of the University within academia, as “an international University of choice, anchored in Africa, dynamically shaping the future” – a vision statement embedded within the heart of the institution UJ is an institution that welcomes anyone who has a thirst for knowledge – that is one of the things we pride ourselves in; we are an accessible institution, regardless of where one may come from. UJ’s role over the past eight years, since the merger, has been to build an image the University community could be proud of. We are now able to see the change we are affecting within our society and globally. And so, the next ten years will see the University shift its focus from an institution of accessible excellence to that of global excellence and stature. With this comes an increased effort on innovations and interventions in teaching and learning, and research; as well as collaborations in research with local and international institutions of higher education. We want to be the institution that attracts and retains the best domestic and international scholars and talent, and that forms part of becoming that international University of choice; an international and respected Pan-Africa epicentre of critical engagement, reflection and scholarship

- Description: “To be ‘in charge’ is certainly not only to carry out the proper measures yourself but to see that everyone else does so too; to see that no one either wilfully or ignorantly thwarts or prevents such measures. It is neither to do everything yourself nor to appoint a number of people to each duty, but to ensure that each does that duty to which he is appointed.” Florence Nightingale, Notes on Nursing: What It Is, and What It Is Not has done for the University and for this country. It is a rather fitting quote for a leader of our time, both in education and the nursing health profession. Prof Marie, a woman who has made a huge mark in academia and health, leaves UJ this year as she enters retirement, and so we saw it fitting to pay homage to this indestructible structure that has been a part of the institution from as early as the 80s. She believes wholeheartedly in furthering the mission of equality for women in South Africa and in the education space. She is a firm believer in keeping one’s house in order. She is a self-starter. She is a pioneer in her own right. She is a leader. She is one of the best administrators in the country. Indeed, few women in our time can match the achievements of Prof Marie. Under her watchful eye, the University has managed to proudly place itself among the top institutions on the African continent, as well as globally. Merging the administration processes of our three legacy institutions could not have been a small feat, as each one came with its own way of “doing” things. Prof Marie took on the challenge as UJ’s first Registrar and executed her responsibilities of helping the University find its new identity as “an international university of choice, anchored in Africa, dynamically shaping the future”. I’m sure I speak for the whole UJ community when I say we at UJ wish her well in her retirement. May you enjoy these golden years, and may they be the most memorable as you reap the fruits of your labour. And to Prof Kinta Burger, who will take over as UJ’s Registrar, we wish you the best of luck, and offer our support as the UJ community as you fill these undoubtedly big shoes.

- Description: The University’s Preamble to the UJ Strategic Thrusts: 2011 – 2020 is/states that UJ strives to provide education that is accessible and affordable, challenging, imaginative and innovative, and a just, responsible and sustainable society. An educational institution is not just about the teaching and learning, but also the contribution it makes to society and the distance it would go to ensure that education is accessible to all, but also inexpensive. The second Strategic Thrust which was set out to be achieved by 2020 states that UJ work towards “a reputation as a comprehensive institution with a unique identity in the higher education sector because of the stature and quality of its scientific and technology-rich programmes and its scientific and technology-driven research, innovation and technology transfer”. In this edition we commemorate researchers and scholars at UJ who have made an impact with the work they’ve done. We encourage those on the outside looking in to be involved in shaping the futures of young minds and making a difference in society and in South Africa. There is so much that is yet to be discovered and shared with the rest of the world. Highly qualified and innovative professors and scholars are crucial to building a world-renowned reputation. These are the people our students will look up to and aspire to emulate when they choose the route to contribute to education, research, science and technology in our country, and be forward-thinking and cutting edge young scholars. Partnerships are vital to enabling collaboration, commercialisation and innovation at the University. These are the people who provide much needed support, in the form of funding, sponsorships or otherwise, for ground-breaking initiatives and projects to come to fruition with aweinspiring results. There is so much more that many at UJ are doing behind the scenes; in the laboratory, in the lecture halls and internationally. They all form a crucial part of this institution. I leave you with these last words of inspiration. If nothing else, let them spark a desire to be part of the efforts that staff, students and scholars from all walks of life are contributing to making UJ one of the best. “To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, require creative imagination and marks real advance in science.” – Albert Einstein Be bold enough to be great. Be bold enough to be brilliant.

- Description: There’s nothing that makes an individual feel more empowered than having knowledge, since as the saying goes, “knowledge is power”. Education is a tool to many successes and a weapon to overcome even the worst of circumstances. Often we don’t realise the impact we have in helping others to achieve their goals, regardless of the environment or situation. Yes, when student have dreams and they want to reach that goal, they will do everything in their power to make it happen. As in life, however, we all need help to make it through some challenges - and there are plenty of challenges along the way. In this edition of the UJ Advance you’ll learn of the different projects and initiatives the community at the University of Johannesburg has developed to help students while they reach for their dreams. Sometimes we may tend to overlook how other aspects of life may impact the academic, and thus not taking into account the need to provide support in those areas. We recognise those individuals spearheading support services at UJ which have been crucial in the successes of our students over the years. It’s a thirst for knowledge that brings us all together, but at the end of the day, there will also be other elements which determine how well we perform. There is much more still to be achieved, and so let this be a challenge to you as staff, students, stakeholders and the wider UJ community to share your ideas of how we can make the University experience that much more enriching and successful for all our students. Let’s put our efforts together in helping our students to a future that is extraordinary.
