- Description: Five years into our merger, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) begins to reap the harvest of its investment in research. Enhancing our research profile is one of the key elements of our transformation plan. To achieve this goal, we have undertaken four key strategic initiatives. First, we have increased our aggregate investment in research, in concrete terms raising our internal resources dedicated for this purpose from R15 million to R60 million over the last three years. This increased internal investment has been directed both to research projects and for postgraduate and postdoctoral fellowships. Second, our research profile has been strengthened by the quality of our academics. Our human resources have been enhanced on the one hand by a bold policy of recruitment, and on the other by a system of rewards for existing top researchers. To this end the Research Office has made a number of direct professorial appointments, and established a category of excellence to help reward and empower productive researchers.

UJ 2009 Teaching and learning report

- Date: 2013-04-08
- Subjects: University of Johannesburg - Teaching and learning report
- Type: Report
- Identifier: uj:5368 , http://hdl.handle.net/10210/8275
- Description: Our report seeks to give a sense of the growing importance and stature of teaching and learning at UJ, alongside our two other core activities of research and community outreach. The creative initiatives in support of student learning which are presented in the Report reflect a year of note at UJ. This was the year in which we began rolling out the UJ Teaching and Learning Strategy. It was also the year when we welcomed the first cohort of students onto our campuses with the National Senior Certificate and began to pilot the National Benchmark Tests. We paid close attention to our taught programmes and to the professional capacity of our teaching staff. Our exemplary Strong Programmes contributed to our enhanced stature and visibility and we made available additional professional development opportunities to staff, as well as support for advanced studies through our Staff Qualifications Project. 2009 was also a year of lively debates in the policy domain. For instance, around the Higher Education Qualifications Framework, around diversity and differentiation in the sector, and around the proposed ‘four-year curriculum’.
