Abstract
Our report seeks to give a sense of the growing
importance and stature of teaching and learning at UJ,
alongside our two other core activities of research and
community outreach. The creative initiatives in support
of student learning which are presented in the Report
reflect a year of note at UJ. This was the year in which
we began rolling out the UJ Teaching and Learning
Strategy. It was also the year when we welcomed the
first cohort of students onto our campuses with the
National Senior Certificate and began to pilot the
National Benchmark Tests. We paid close attention to our taught programmes and
to the professional capacity of our teaching staff. Our
exemplary Strong Programmes contributed to our
enhanced stature and visibility and we made available
additional professional development opportunities to
staff, as well as support for advanced studies through our
Staff Qualifications Project. 2009 was also a year of lively debates in the policy domain.
For instance, around the Higher Education Qualifications
Framework, around diversity and differentiation
in the sector, and around the proposed ‘four-year curriculum’.
