Abstract
The Faculty of Law and UJ Library invite you to
a public lecture by ADV KEVIN MALUNGA on
The Public Protector: The Untold Stories and the Real Life-changing Work that go Unrecognised
FACILITATOR: Mr Elton Hart, Clinic Attorney: UJ Soweto Campus
This public lecture will highlight the untold or less told story of the work of the Office of the Public Protector. The media tends to focus on the more sensational matters with the result that the real life changing work goes unrecognized. The following will be discussed:
• The mission, impact and value system of the institution.
• The greatest successes and challenges experienced by the office, especially with regard to complaints against municipalities and other organs of state and their often tardy responses.
• The misplaced narrative that expects the Office of the Public Protector to be the enemy of the State.
• Identifying various governance risks such as service delivery protests.
• The threat posed by improper procurement of goods and services by the state and how it compromises the economic fibre of the country.
• The future of the Public Protector as a custodian of good and ethical governance.
