Abstract
Public Lecture hosted by the Department of Business Management
in the Faculty of Management in partnership with the UJ Library. Presented by Dr Alex Alexiev, Assistant Professor in Strategic Management and Innovation at
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
In the 21st century, globalisation and the rise of technology are driving unprecedented
changes in organizations worldwide. At the same time, societies are facing global issues,
markets are disrupted and innovative services appear that challenge the status quo. What is
the role of public universities and management education on the backdrop of these important
shifts? How can we, as important institutions of higher education contribute to a society that
provides opportunities for its citizens to grow and create? What are the important boundaries
and barriers that still need to be overcome? In this public lecture, the key topic discussed will
be how management and management education can contribute to address such important
challenges. Some experiences and observations from the Netherlands and other countries will
be shared.
Dr Alexiev’s main research concentrates on how advice to top executives can shape important
decisions related to innovation, inter-organizational collaboration and entrepreneurship. He
currently investigates contemporary knowledge work settings such as professional service
firms, performing arts organizations and new ventures. His research has been published in the
Journal of Management Studies, R&D Management, and Journal of Business Research. DATE 23 March 2016 // 16:30 for 17:00
