Abstract
An investigation is conducted into the nature, characteristics and manifestation of
the “eenheidsbundel,” a unified volume of verse, in Afrikaans poetry and the genre specific
term “eenheidsdigbundel” is suggested.
Three distinct periods of research into unified volumes of verse are identified. These
are described and from this a description of the characteristics of a unified volume of verse
are gleaned.
Due to intensified interest in unified volumes of verse in contemporary Afrikaans
poetry, an investigation is launched into the literary conversation during this period as
conducted via reviews and interviews on the subject. It is concluded that despite the term
unified volume of verse being an umbrella term, it does have value in terms of its
contributions towards identifying and describing a specific type of volumes of poetry.
It is suggested that degrees of kinship between volumes displaying similar
characteristics, be identified. An illustration of examples of such kinships are offered.
