Abstract

In the past years, as Washington has focused its attention on the Middle East, it has virtually ignored a dangerous phenomenon close to home. With the United States preoccupied elsewhere, the gangs have grown in power and numbers; today, local officials estimate their size at 70,000 – 100,000 members. The maras now present the most serious challenge to peace in the region since the end of Central America’s civil wars.
