Abstract
In September 2015, African Governments, along
with other, international governments, agreed on the
necessity of working towards a number of initiatives
called the “sustainable development goals” that aim
to alleviate poverty in its various forms in the
coming years. They agreed to end poverty, protect
the planet and ensure prosperity for all as part of a
new sustainable development agenda. It was further
agreed that each goal would be achieved over the
next 15 years. The primary goal of this initiative is
to end poverty. According to the United Nations
study, 836 million people still live in extreme
poverty and at least one of five persons in
developing countries lives on less than 1.25 US
dollars per day. Further, the United Nations reported
that high rates of poverty are found mainly in small,
fragile and conflict-affected countries.
