Abstract
This article reports on a study undertaken to assess the state of emotional wellness of employees as well as management effectiveness within the public healthcare sector. For this purpose a Johannesburg public hospital was used as a case study. A qualitative approach was utilized, but it was decided to include triangulation of methodology to increase the reliability of the data. Both a self-administered questionnaire and focus group interviews were used as data gathering instruments. Forty-six focus group interviews were conducted and a total of 850 employees
participated in these interviews. A total of 388 employees returned their questionnaires (response rate = 32%). A number of key issues relating to management effectiveness and employee wellness were identified. The findings and their implications will be explored further.
