Abstract
The article focuses on the relationship between mobile money banking and financial inclusion in the context of developing countries. Failure to understand this relationship may contribute to increased socio-economic challenges, such as the digital divide that South Africa is currently facing, and the communities that may be left behind in the digital economy. The article employed unobtrusive research methods and the methodology entails a desktop research approach by way of a comprehensive literature study. The literature study is divided into a conceptual, theoretical, contextual and economic component. The study found that the use of mobile money provides an opportunity to include marginalised groups in the economic mainstream of the country, but its effectiveness in promoting financial inclusion in South Africa has not been adequately explored.
