Abstract
This study sought to explore causes of workforce segmentation at a manufacturing firm in Zimbabwe. Research participants, who took part in this qualitative study were chosen using purposive sampling technique. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather data from research participants. The study found a number of reasons that compelled the case firm in Zimbabwe to divide its workforce in different segments. Research participants noted that the case firm in Zimbabwe segment workforce in-order to minimise costs, manage demand fluctuation and business risks, achieve labour market flexibility and customize management practices. The study recommends managers to lessen problems associated with workforce segmentation namely deep wage gap, discrimination and social exclusion as they may fuel workplace conflicts. Lastly, the study recommends workers to take the current study's findings into account when seeking employment and making their career plans.
