Abstract
This study assesses the implementation of sustainable development goal (SDG) 5 in South African public service. The qualitative research approach is utilized. The guiding question to this study is as follows: what factors affect the effective implementation of SDG 5 in South African public service? The study is based on secondary data from a literature review. Secondary information is compiled from relevant legislation on SDGs, SDG 5, books and journal articles on gender and gender equality, official publications and annual South African public service reports, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), Commission of Gender Equality (CGE), and Department of Labour (DoL), and electronic information is obtained from internet (Google) searches. Data analysis is done through conceptual and document analyzes. The findings indicate that significant factors/reasons hamper the effective implementation of SDG 5 in the South African public service. These factors incorporate legislative, institutional, human resources, and technological factors. The study also explores that women are underrepresented in decision-making, strategic, and leadership positions. Furthermore, recommendations are offered for improvement.
