Abstract
The effects of climate change continue to ripple through various human spheres, drawing increasing attention over the years. Given the global implications, addressing these challenges through multi-stakeholder collaboration has become more critical than ever. Although African countries are not exempt from the impacts of climate change despite their low global emissions, both African states and non-state actors recognize the importance of implementing policies and practical measures to adapt to and mitigate these effects. While many studies have explored the roles of state actors in climate change governance, little focus has been given to non-state actors, such as the African Union. Therefore, using secondary sources, this article examines the African Union's role in climate change governance in Africa between 2000, which marked the inception of the organisation, and 2022, which marked the institutionalisation of a comprehensive framework: the African Union Climate Change and Resilient Development Strategy and Action Plan (2022–2032). Addressing the evolving challenges of climate change across the continent aligns with the African Union’s objectives. Despite the inherent difficulties, the African Union has made significant contributions to the continent's climate change governance. Hence, this article provides a comprehensive view of the African Union’s initiatives, collaborations, successes, and challenges in promoting continental climate governance architecture.
