Abstract
Purpose of study: This study seeks to determine the underlying thematic factors of an entrepreneurial ecosystem, considering the linkage between economic growth and development. It aimed at identifying the factors of the entrepreneurial ecosystem by identifying them thematically from the literature generated in the last decade (2012 to 2022).Design/Methodology/Approach: This study applied a qualitative research design and utilised an in-depth literature review and a thematic analysis to identify the key themes pertaining to entrepreneurial ecosystems from the literature. We identified several factors needed to ensure an enabling entrepreneurship ecosystem from the initial literature review. The thematic analysis was applied until data saturation was achieved.Results/Findings: The initial literature review revealed 11 factors, and the thematic review 10. Most of the factors identified through the thematic analysis contained elements of those identified in the literature. The identified elements indicated that entrepreneurial ecosystems retain additional complexities that go beyond any one field of analysis and operate as a carefully balanced synthesis of them all in permutations that require a triage unique to the particular ecosystem being observed.Managerial implication: Understanding which entrepreneurial ecosystem factors are present, overperforming or underperforming, in context of the dynamics of the individual ecosystem may assist policymakers in redesigning developmental policies. This information may also assist entrepreneurs in making informed decisions regarding future growth aspirations. Entrepreneurial ecosystems fuel local economic vibrancy and national economic progress by creating fertile environments for new and developing businesses to thrive.
