Abstract
Global policy making could be profoundly impacted by artificial intelligence (AI), which presents chances for more effective and data-driven decision-making. Artificial Intelligence has the capacity to revolutionise public policy formulation. AI could help decision-makers identify the most pressing issues impacting their constituency by analysing vast databases and data gathered from the public. However, there are some attendant risks and challenges to the adoption of AI in policymaking. Given this, the research investigates the potential advantages, disadvantages, and opportunities of utilising AI in the formulation of public policy. The study being qualitative in its orientation and approach was guided by an interpretivist research paradigm. The study was predicated on a thorough examination of written texts that were specifically and purposively chosen, and these written documents were then subjected under thematic and content analysis. The study established that deploying AI in public policymaking is beneficial in that it enhances data driven decision making, inclusive policy making, efficiency and cost savings, enhanced transparency and accountability, among others. The study also noted that data risks and bias, erosion of decision making autonomy, lack of skills, lack of collaborative culture and cybersecurity threats are impediments to the deployment of AI in public policymaking. These challenges can be mitigated through data standardisation, training, data sharing agreements among others.
