Abstract
The recurrent poor performance in mathematics of South African learners is a cause for concern and requires immediate intervention. There is growing research interest in the role that values play in learners’ mathematics achievement. Values are reflected in many education policies, curriculum-and assessment documents, and practices of pedagogy. The role values play in mathematics education is one of the major factors to consider when endeavouring to advance the quality of mathematics teaching-andlearning. Therefore, this study focuses on learners’ values in mathematics and forms part of the large-scale, international What I Find Important (WIFI) in mathematics learning project and is conducted in a South African context for the first time. The current study aimed to establish the values that Grade 8 to 10 learners from a mathematics-and-science-focus school in Johannesburg associate with effective mathematics learning.
