Abstract

The integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) continues to transform teaching and learning within the South African education system. In Life Sciences, where learners often encounter highly abstract concepts such as Homeostasis, ICT tools may provide meaningful support for improving conceptual understanding. Kahoot! is a widely used gamification platform that offers opportunities for interactive formative assessment capable of promoting learner engagement, participation and content mastery. However, limited empirical research has examined how Kahoot! specifically supports the teaching and learning of Homeostasis at Grade 10 level. This mixed-methods study investigated the effectiveness of utilizing Kahoot! to enhance Grade 10 Life Sciences learners’ comprehension of Homeostasis. The study employed an embedded mixed-methods design and collected data from three Grade 10 Life Sciences teachers and twenty-two learners in Johannesburg, Gauteng. Data were generated through pre- and post-tests, as well as semi-structured interviews with both teachers and learners. Quantitative data were used to determine the effect of Kahoot! on academic achievement, while qualitative data explored participant perceptions, advantages, limitations, and experiences with the platform. The study revealed that Kahoot! effectively enhances Grade 10 learners’ comprehension of Homeostasis in Life Sciences. Learners demonstrated improved academic achievement, increased engagement, and higher long-term retention of complex concepts. The platform’s interactive and competitive features, coupled with immediate feedback, promoted active participation, peer collaboration, and learner confidence. The study has implications for teachers, curriculum developers and policy stakeholders regarding ICT integration to enhance science teaching and learning.
