Abstract
Mining companies may be reluctant to adopt 4IR technology due to the lack of knowledge of the
benefits and challenges associated with 4IR technologies. This research paper sought to understand
what the benefits of 4IR in the mining industry are in terms of safety, productivity, profitability,
and competitiveness. It also sought to understand the challenges associated with the
implementation of the various 4IR technologies and also an understanding of whether ‘digital
champions’ mining companies are realizing better benefits when compared to the low-ranked
companies.
The researcher embarked on answering these questions by utilizing a hybrid approach
encompassing both quantitative and qualitative research tools. The researcher used a survey to
extract information from the various engineering professionals in the mining industry to get their
perspectives, beliefs, or experiences on 4IR technologies. The interview was conducted with
experts who are experienced in championing 4IR in the mining industry.
Survey results strongly endorse 4IR's role in enabling low-cost extraction strategies and improving
safety and competitiveness. Interviews with 4IR experts highlight benefits such as enhanced safety
management and improved operational efficiency. Digital champions, with high digital maturity,
realize superior benefits. Challenges that companies face in pursuit of 4IR in mining include skills
shortage, stakeholder resistance, inadequate infrastructure, budget constraints, and cyber security
issues.
In conclusion, while 4IR holds significant promise for the South African mining industry,
addressing challenges is imperative for successful implementation. Strategic interventions are
needed to bridge skills gaps, overcome stakeholder concerns, and ensure a seamless transition to
4IR in the mining industry.
