Abstract
Traditionally, research into automation systems has focused on automation technologies, while little is understood about the skills and knowledge required for operators to effectively make use of automation systems. The aim of the research was to identify the skills and knowledge currently possessed by operators as well as the skills and knowledge required of operators in automated environments.
The research study made use of the survey research method and a questionnaire (implementing snowball sampling) to gain the perspective of operators and industry specialists. According to the findings of the study, personal and interpersonal skills are vital for operators to handle the demands brought upon by automation technologies. Technology and digital knowledge are key in assisting operators to better understand automation technologies. The research identified the skills gap that exists and can be used to develop a system to up-skill operators.
