Abstract
Background: The use of GIS in the provision of emergency relief for informal settlements in a broad-based fashion is necessary and an appropriate response that needs to be rolled out and up-scaled as soon as possible. However, studies have shown that GIS is not extensively applied in local governments especially in disaster management and its use is less understood. Objective: To determine the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) in disaster and emergency response in Walmer informal settlements.
