Abstract
One of the major challenges in education in South Africa is the poor performance of learners. There are various factors such as poor work ethics of teachers and learners, the lack of support from education authorities and lack of knowledge of subject content of teachers. Many research studies have cited that learners scored poorly against their African counterparts because teachers lack the necessary instructional expertise. It is apparent that if teachers are provided with professional development, they are more likely to provide quality teaching which will impact on learner achievement.
