Abstract
The South African Schools Act, No. 84 of 1996 aimed at creating a new national schooling system. This system came with a shift in decision-making powers through the decentralisation of directive leadership from the state to the school level. With that, school governing bodies (SGBs) were granted the responsibility of managing the school’s funds. School financial management, being a complex set of management actions aims at realising effective education, and requires SGBs to develop competencies and skill in order to be accountable and responsible for funds placed in their care.
