Abstract
This study explores the role of public participation in enhancing good governance within local government. It examines the theoretical foundations of public participation, highlights its importance in ensuring transparency and accountability, and discusses various models and mechanisms/strategies employed in South Africa to facilitate public participation. The study also investigates the challenges faced in implementing effective public participation processes and suggests potential strategies to overcome them. Furthermore, it explores the link between public participation and good governance, emphasising the positive impact of citizen involvement in planning, decision-making, and implementation processes regarding issues that affect communities directly. The findings of this study will emphasise the need for continuous efforts to strengthen public participation in South Africa's local government to ensure good governance and promote democratic practices.
