Many schools in the North West Province obtained Grade 12 results that were unacceptably low with the pass rate between 0- 20% in 1999. For this reason, Education Action Zones, which later became known as the Secondary School Improvement Plan as an intervention strategy was introduced in order to improve the performance of educators and learners in those schools. The purpose of this research is to investigate the role of parents in promoting the Education Action Zones intervention strategy. In order to address parental involvement in the Education Action Zones intervention strategy this research is organised in the following manner: the statement of the research; the aims; the research methodology; and definitions of terms relevant to the study.
