Abstract
Due to the vulnerable, non-linear and unpredictable conditions of the world of work which require employees to demonstrate an increase level of flexibility and self-management, employees are faced with a great responsibility to take ownership of their careers through developing necessary career attitudes to enhance their proactive behaviours when dealing with unusual and unpredictable situations. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between job crafting and contemporary career attitudes among South African employees, whereby contemporary career attitudes consisted of a protean career attitude and a boundaryless career attitude. A quantitative approach, cross-sectional survey design was administered to a sample of employees within the South African context (n=296). Results from correlation analysis have shown no correlation between protean career attitude and job crafting, whilst boundaryless career attitude and job crafting have indicated a positive correlation. Subsequently, the analysis of regression has indicated an 8% amount of variance in job crafting that is explained by protean and boundaryless career attitudes, thus contemporary career attitude has proved to be one of the drivers of job crafting behaviours in the modern constantly changing world of work. Practically, this study suggests that employees develop and nourish contemporary career attitudes as they enhance employees’ ability to proactively meet the endless unpredictable demands of the ever-changing world of work.
